J. SEWELL HAWORTH: Born in Manchester, October 28, 1848. His father was well known in the commercial and political life of the city, and distinguished in Methodism by his devotion and generosity. He was a personal friend of Dr. W. B. Pope, under whose influence his son was brought early in life. He began to preach when in a school in Wrexham, was accepted as a candidate for the Ministry in 1870, and after training at Headingley, was appointed to the Brixton Hill Circuit. Twenty-one years later he became a Supernumerary and settled at Llangollen. He still preached in the Wrexham and other circuits, where his labours were greatly appreciated. He was jealous for the old teaching and traditions of Methodism, took the deepest interest in all the details of church life, and many a struggling village society was helped by his gifts. He was a generous supporter of every good work. After twenty-two years in Llangollen, he removed to Bideford, where he endeared himself to the Methodists by his earnest and evangelical preaching and by the personal friendships which he formed with the ministers and people.
