These instructions are for Palm Users who are not experienced in downloading, unzipping and installing Palm Organizer Software ================================================================ When you find the site that has the web page you want, you will normally be able to click on the hot link that will start the file downloading to your desktop in your browser. To download DateBk4, put this URL into your web browser: http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/datebk4.htm Locate the link on the page to download the application itself and click on it. Your web browser will prompt you for a location to store the file into - select some known directory or folder as you will need to find this file again in a moment. If you do not get a dialog prompting you to save the file, then RIGHT-CLICK (Windows) or OPTION-CLICK (MAC) the link which should force your web browser to display the file save dialog. When you have finished downloading the file, if it has a ZIP extension, that means that it is a compressed archive in which several files have been compressed and combined into a single file. You will need to use an unzip utility that can handle V-2 zip files (all zip utilities released in the last few years support this format). These utilities are widely available throughout the internet in versions for DOS, Windows, Win95/NT, MAC, UNIX, etc. Some of these versions are shareware and some are freeware. Any of the large software archives will have a copy of an unzip programs, so your first step will be to download one of these programs. Personally, I use WinZip which is shareware and which I find is extremely useful, but there are many other solutions that also work. You can download WinZip from HTTP://WWW.WINZIP.COM It has nag screens, but is perfectly operational in its unregistered form, so you can use that to unzip the Pimlico programs. If you find yourself needing a zip utility, this one comes highly recommended and the shareware author will surely appreciate its registration (not to mention that you get free updates and removal of the nag screens!). Another good unzip utility is Aladdin's Expander which runs on Windows, MS/DOS AND the MAC OS, so MAC users can use this program to unzip files. You can download it from: http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html Use your unZip utility to display the contents of the archive. Usually, after you have downloaded and installed an UNZIP utility, it will have associated itself with the ZIP extension, so if you double-click on a file with a ZIP extension, it will automatically run the UnZip utility and display the contents of the ZIP archive. You will now see one or more files with a PRC extension - these are the actual program files that you will download to your Palm Organizer. A file with a DOC, TXT or HTM extension is most likely a documentation file that will tell you how to use the program. There may also be a README file which you should always read first as it may contain information that was too late to make it into the standard documentation file. You should be able to click on a file in the displayed archive and then extract it to a directory on your PC. With WinZip, you will see an EXTRACT button on the toolbar which will allow you to select a specific file, or all files, to be unzipped and placed into a directory on your desktop. Run the Palm Install program. By default, this will be C:\PALM\INSTAP.EXE, and you should be able to find a pointer/shortcut to this item in the Palm program group. Click on the ADD button (or BROWSE if you are using the V-2 desktop software) and a standard directory dialog will open up. Navigate to the directory into which you extracted the PRC file, locate that file and double-click on it. Click on the INSTALL button to install the application. Note that you can install another application at this point, or just exit. Put your Palm Organizer in the HotSync Cradle and press the HotSync Button. The new program file will be downloaded to your Palm Organizer, and its icon should now be displayed in the Palm's main applications screen, ready to run. READ THE DOCUMENTATION FIRST BEFORE TRYING TO RUN THE PROGRAM!!! If hotsync does not copy your program down to your organizer, make SURE that your conduit is set so that INSTALL is enabled (Custom Menu in the Palm Desktop software). To register the program, run the application by tapping on the program icon in the main application screen. Tap on the Menu button on the Pilot and you should see an OPTIONS menu appear which contains the REGISTER WEEKVIEW or REGISTER SOFTWARE selection. Tap on that and a dialog appears into which you can enter your registration code. Then Tap on the OK button. You should get a confirming dialog indicating that the registration has been accepted. If it does not register, most likely the problem is that you have not provided us with your correct HotSyncID, in which case, please read the next section below. If you need further assistance, it would probably be best to study the Pilot Manual in more detail and practice with non-essential files. ===================================================== READ THIS ONLY IF YOUR REGISTRATION CODE DOES NOT WORK! ===================================================== To register the program, run the application by tapping on the program icon in the main application screen. You need to realize that the Registration code IS correct for the HotSyncID that you provided to us. So what we need to do is figure out what your CORRECT HotSyncID is. We assume that you have already examined the email we sent you which displays the HotSyncID that we used to generate your registration code (this was the HotSyncID provided by you or the registration service, so verify that is correct first. 1. Check that you did give us the right HotSyncID. This information is displayed in the REGISTER SOFTWARE option in the About Dialog. The dialog that appears will tell you what your HotSyncID is. Remember: the HotSyncID IS CASE-SENSITIVE!!!! Alternatively, you can run the PalmPilot desktop application and select the USERS item under the TOOLS menu. Your HotSyncID is the user name that you specified when you first set up your Pilot to talk to your Desktop and will be listed when you bring up that menu item. 2. If you are still convinced that you provided us with the correct HotSyncID, the next most likely explanation is that you have a problem with spaces. If you have one or more spaces in the middle of your HotSyncID, do you have just ONE space between each name? Make sure there are no spaces at the start or the end of your HotSyncID. If in doubt, you can press the RENAME button when that dialog appears, and then Control/C to copy it to the clipboard where you can then paste it into a return email to us. 3. Make sure you entered the registration code for the correct software product. Each Pimlico program uses a unique registration code, so the registration code for Datebk3, for example, will NOT work with DateBk4 and vice versa. If you are still having difficulties, then send us another email. The reason our confidence is high that the registration code is correct is that (a) your HotSyncID is not rekeyed - it is read automatically from the registration information sent to us by the registration service, and (b) the registration number is generated by the SAME computer routine that is embedded in the program you are using. Cheers! CESD
