Most currently existing window systems are built for computers with special purpose hardware which they directly control. Yet many larger computers which are used for conventional timesharing or as special application servers, have neither the hardware required to implement a sophisticated window system, nor have the software developed to support such hardware were it available. This thesis proposes a solution for such systems: a remote window system protocol. It allows an existing computer with a window system (the workstation) to act as a server for applications running on the host machine. There are numerous advantages to implementing a window system in this manner: no new hardware need be developed for the host; minimal software development is required (certainly less than development of a window system from scratch); the host need not know any specifics of the workstation; and the host application can be used without software changes from any type of workstation which implements this protocol.
