Subject: radar detectors

   From: jtkohl@MIT.EDU (John T Kohl)

   1) any restrictions on owning/operating one in MA, CA, or WA?
No. Although the staties in CA are not allowed to use radar, so I
don't think it's very useful there. (Local cops can use it, of
course, but the detector is a nuisance in city traffic, so I don't
usually turn it on then.)

   2) can anybody comment on the Whistler, models 280 or 480?

Dunno about the Whistler, but I highly recommend the top-of-the-line
Cobra, or the one just below it (which is what I had.)

No restrictions in any of those states; the only states with detector laws
are CT, VA, and DC (not a state).

I'd recommend, for the ultimate in protection, the Cincinatti Microwave
Escort. I have this and have not yet failed to catch a snooping cop. And,
it's small (not the smallest, mind you) and since I do almost all my driving
in this state, that's good. CM claims this is the most sensitive detector on
the market; I believe them, I've owned the escort since 1980 with their first
model.

For a smaller one, I'd look at the Solo for battery power, or the Passport.

I would NOT recommend whistler detectors, as they are very flimzy and tend
to be much harder to read; the CM's detectors are very easy.
