At 5PM on Friday May 25th MC.LCS.MIT.EDU, the last machine at MIT running
the ITS operating system, will be shut down. The hardware is getting old,
and the amount of maintenance required to keep things running is getting
out of hand. We've been losing ground at an accelerating rate for the last
year.

MC's sibling, AI.AI.MIT.EDU, was going to be shut down at the same time,
but it suffered a fatal disk crash on Friday April 20th, so it has already
passed on.

In the past MC was a major mail gateway, and it still hosts a fair number
of mailing lists. (Many major campus-wide bulletin boards -- including
this one -- are still redistributed at MC.) We will evacuate the important
mailing lists ourselves, but if you maintain a mailing list of your own
on MC, you must move it yourself.

MC will lose its name to another host on Thursday May 17, so incoming mail
will effectively stop working on that date. MC will still be accessible
under the name "OLD-MC.LCS.MIT.EDU" from then until the final shut down.

When AI died, its official name, "AI.AI.MIT.EDU", became a nickname for
LIFE, the AI Lab's main mail computer -- "LIFE.AI.MIT.EDU", "AI.MIT.EDU"
and "AI.AI.MIT.EDU" are now all synonymous. Thus mail addressed to
Whatever@AI.AI.MIT.EDU is now going to LIFE. (Users of Symbolics Lisp
Machines will get annoying notifications about how AI and LIFE have
"merged" -- these notifications can be safely ignored.)

Additional information about other issues, such as the fate of files stored
on ITS machines or on ITS backup tapes, can be found on MC in the file
SYS;GOOD BYE. Please address all questions to DOOMSDAY@MC.LCS.MIT.EDU.
