Proposals for a new www.mit.edu home page
Summarized commentary
Good things: fuzzball, fitting on one page
Avoid, but...: imagemaps[1], solid color backgrounds[2]
"Right Out": patterned backgrounds, frames, blink
Footnotes
[1] If they are redundant, and have a clientside map, maybe ok.
[2] Only if they actually are helpful with navigation, see idea (A)
Ideas/comments/variations
- (A) Make each of the menu items a different color, and the corresponding
sub pages have those backgrounds, for navigation sake
- (B) Ditch the black backgrounds around the categories altogether
- (C) Add some brief descriptive text under the categories
- (D) Somehow keep/incorporate the old graphics/icons
- (E) Somehow decrease space between the "Of interest" and the list
- (F) Develop new icons, and use them
Issues
- URLs of the form href="/foo/bar" or "foo/bar"
- Latter has the advantage of web.mit.edu access in case of an outage
- Old pictures/no pictures/new pictures
- Search engine
