Turns out jdk & tomcat are both in the NetBSD packages collection --- 
getting tomcat up & serving off 8080 wasn't much more involved than 
"make && make install" and following the instructions at the tail of
the make install output.

kawa, OTOH, I'm having to build by hand; stopped late last night 
after twice failing to get it to build without errors.  I suspect 
it's just that I don't have any experience with java & haven't got
my CLASSPATH, etc., set correctly.

I think with an MIT audience taking an attitude of "here's enough
rope to hang yourself --- don't be stupid" is perfectly reasonable.
