Sniffing? Use Kerberos. Then, you never have to type
your password over the network. To do this you need a
srvtab, which is used for host authentication.
In other words, you can not securely telnet (or
rlogin) to your machine without this. You can get a
srvtab by sending mail to accounts@mit.edu and
asking for one. Remember to tell them the name of your
machine.
Inside problems:
Bad SUID programs? Update periodically to take advantage
of newer packages.

General: subscribe to linux-announce to get
announcements. They will tell you what to do about security
holes as they arise and are fixed.
