Subject: finboard funding

The SIPB has historically been a Finboard funded activity. Several
thousand dollars worth of the original SIPB office furniture was
purchased for the SIPB by Finboard in 1970 (when coincidentally, the
SIPB chairman was on Finboard).

When I was SIPB Treasurer, I discovered that Finboard kept virtually
no records from year to year, nor was there much overlap in personnel.
As a result, the amount of funds that they would allocate to a given
activity from year to year was totally random.

In no way is SIPB similar to the Society of Physics Students, Six
Appeal, etc. The former are presumably funded by their departments.
The SIPB should be portraying itself as a student service
organization, more similar to APO or TCA than the departmental
activities. Although SIPB recieves funding from IS (or whatever its
called this decade), historically our claim is that IS only funded our
computing expenses, and that the Finboard should help with general
office expenses.

Another approach is to ask to examine the Finboard budget to find out
all the worthy activities they DO fund. You'd probably be quite
surprised. If you want some of us alumni who generally give
unrestricted gifts, or student activity directed gifts to start asking
the Institute about frivilous wastes of money, we might be happy to
oblige..
