The name "Meikyo" was given by Gichin Funakoshi. It was called Rohai in other Ryu, where there were three versions: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan. However, there is only one Meikyo. There are two major differences between the Rohai and Meikyo: Rohai uses Sagi Ashi Dachi (Some call it Tsuru Ashi Dachi or Gankaku Dachi), while Meikyo has none. Also, Meikyo has a techniques designed to counter a BO, while Rohai has none. The claim that Rohai and Meikyo being related is not shared by all traditional teachers. There are no evidence to prove one way or the other. There is so little information about Meikyo and Rohai that no one really know if they belong to the Shorin or the Shorei type. If any one has any further information about this I would appreciate it if that information would be posted.
