"I am astounded ... at the wonderful power you have developed - and terrified at the thought that so much hideous and bad music may be put on record forever."
Arthur Sullivan, on seeing Edison's talking machine in 1888

OggSQUISH is a general purpose compressed, digitized audio storage format. It is designed to be faster, more flexible and higher quality than the now ubiquitous MPEG, as well as surpass the functionality and durability of upcoming next-generation compressed audio formats such as AT&T's PAC and NTT's TwinVQ. In addition, the Ogg bitstream specification is to remain solidly in the public domain and free versions of the Ogg library and basic applications will be available at all times (for non-commercial uses). In the mid-term, OggSQUISH will also incorporate ongoing video compression research to become a truly integrated, multimedia compression standard.
