Interface to the MySQL database server
--------------------------------------

This directory provides a C interface to the MySQL relational database
server.  Using this interface, you can communicate with and control
this database server from Moscow ML programs.  The interaction uses
the standard query language SQL, which is not described here.  The
many books about relational database management systems (RDBMS), and
the MySQL documentation, describe SQL.

The MySQL interface was implemented by Thomas Iversen on the basis of
the Postgres interface written by Peter Sestoft.

Note:

 - MySQL does not compute cmdtuples correctly after an SQL delete
 - MySQL 3.22.21 does not implement the bool type: the parser
   accepts the type name bool but implements it as int, and the
   literals false and true both map to the integer 0

The interface consists of the following files:

        mmysql.c        Implements the dynamic library libmmysql.so which 
                        interfaces Moscow ML to the MySQL library.

You must have the following components:
        
        MySQL           Can be found many places on the Internet, such as
                        http://www.mysql.com

        Dynlib          The Moscow ML foreign (C) function interface.
                        Supported for Linux, Solaris, MS Win32, MacOS,
	                Digital Unix, and HP-UX in mosml 1.44

The runtime system must be compiled with support for dynamic linking
of foreign functions (edit mosml/src/Makefile.inc to achieve this).

1. Edit the mmysql/Makefile to make MYSQLLIBDIR and MYSQLINCDIR point
to the directories contain the MySQL runtime library and the MySQL
include files.

2. Compile mmysql.c:

        make

3. Install libmmysql.so in the directory determined by BINDIR in
   src/Makefile.inc:

        make install

4. Set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the BINDIR directory.

        For tcsh: setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $BINDIR
        For bash: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$BINDIR

5. Test the library:

        mosml testmysql.sml
