"Clare Cycle" began badly with the first poem uncertainly declaimed against music of little interest. But the following three songs accumulated a remarkable intensity that never let up despite the voluptuous variety of lyric and dramatic emphases; these extraordinary songs are not only settings of the poems but interpretations and even a portrait of the poet. Joan Heller was the virtuosic interpreter. David Hoose conducted.
