seriousness with the premiere performance of a Woodwind Quintet by
guest composer Peter Child. The impression it left was of a finely
worked music brimming with invention and timbral elegance. One's
anticipations of where it was going and how it was doing so were
wittily and satisfyingly confounded -- canny, intense stuff indeed.
It forcibly took one out of the funky, hang-loose milieu of a Red
Sneakers concert and had us contemplating that hardy survival art for
art's sake ...
