Subject: Welcome to the SCA account!

Unto the gentles of Mitgaard, many of whom are currently sewing, greetings
from Geoffrey!

As I seem to have made the most changes to it recently, I feel the need to
introduce the new members of the borough, and some of the older ones as
well, to one of our resources; the sca account.

The sca account on Athena is similar to many personal accounts except that
unlike many people's accounts, the sca account is almost entirely world
readable; this means that even if you are not one of the officers or other
people who know the password, you can read the files.

These files include a large amount of information about the barony of
Carolingia, upcoming events and regular practices, past events, some
"promotional literature," and the electronic mail which the account
receives. It's currently subscribed to both
carolingia@bloom-beacon.mit.edu, which is the barony-wide mailing list (If
you want to be added to carolingia, send mail to
carolingia-request@bloom-beacon, NOT carolingia@bloom-beacon), and it's
also subbed to mitgaard and will therefore get this piece of mail!

"How do I read these files?" you may be wondering. It's easy. At the

athena%

(or whatever yours is) prompt, type

add sca
cd /mit/sca

You should then be in the sca account's homedir. If you do an

ls

you'll get a list of all of our files. Interesting directories which can
be read by anyone at the top level are:

Announcements: This directory includes announcements for upcoming events
(it's rather behind now; I'll fix that soon), and a schedule of regular
events, which is also currently rather out-of-date.

Lit: Promotional literature about the society, and the Rolls Ethereal, a
list of many email-accessible Scadians throughout the world; this is a
godsend when you're moving out of Boston for the summer.

Stuff: Generally informative stuff

Treasury: Budget information, etc. If you're _really_ interested, do let
me know . . . :-)

oh, and Mail: the mail the account receives, in mhmail format (1 message
per file)

I think that's about it. If you're ever interested, then, in getting
information about upcoming practices, all you need to do is

add sca
cd /mit/sca/Announcements
more schedule

and they're all listed for you!

Peace to you all,

Geoffrey Wright, exchequer of Mitgaard
