    I'd like to thank all of the people who e-mailed me their suggestions
    and comments on driving to Pennsic. I have one question, though: what
    is Hwy 422?

		 I take it that there is a Hwy 422 exit sign off of I-79?
yes there is. also, the cooper's lake campground is right next to I79 about
a mile north of the exit, so you will see/smell the war before you get
there.

    One other question: the I-95 to I-80 route seems shorter on paper, and
    involves fewer turnoffs that one could miss in the dark. If I was
    driving at night, would that avoid enough traffic to make that route
    preferable to the I-90, I-84, I-81, I-80 route, or not? And does this
    construction on I-80 which everybody warns me about go on at night as
    well?
i'm not certain what the measured distances are -- you could find that from
any decent US atlas. however, you want to avoid the coast route as much as
possible -- it's more built up and carries more traffic. more importantly,
it requires you to push through the inevitable mess of traffic, ring roads,
etc. around NYC -- and yes, there's traffic there even at night, just
somewhat less. you said you are planning to drive all night; NYC is only 4
hrs away, so you'll hit it either in late evening or early morning, at
which point there will still be traffic jams. road construction rarely goes
on at night, but all the holes in the road and other traffic barriers will
still be there, reducing the lanes available and thus constricting what
traffic there is. I80 is a major EW route and has lots of truck traffic at
night; you -do- risk getting caught in the middle of a truck convoy in a
reduced-to-one-lane construction area several miles long.
    myself, i prefer the northern route: I90 all the way to Erie PA, then
south on I79 to the pennsic exit. it's slightly longer, and does incur
about $20 of tolls (the southern route is free). on the other hand, there's
usually -much- less construction, and it is significantly simpler.
