  Due to time constraints on my part, this is not likely to happen very
  soon, but it could happen if the general consensus of the list is that
  this would be a good idea.  If the membership of the list is
  *overwhelmingly* in favor of this, I'd be inclined to do this.

I have suggested to folks that they broadcast the carolingia mailing list
when they are coming to Boston, or something like that.  To eliminate
posting ability before becoming a subscriber would reduce that utility, and
in addition make us kind of clannish.  Unless the bounce message contained
an email address for an active subscriber that was willing to act as filter
and gateway, or, Bill, if you were willing to process short term onand off
requests very quickly, I would be very against it.

But what do I know, I get close to 100 email messages a day, anyway.
