Subject: re: A Plot to keep our burough "members"

Tibicen writes a bunch of basically sensible stuff; I just wanted to
emphasize this:
>Likewise there're oldtimers who only make it to a few events a year.
>As a rather active member of this borough pointed out to me, $20, when
>you only go to 4 events a year, is rather steep.

This is my other major objection to pay-for-play, which I haven't heard
*anyone* address (especially the Board). The problem with pay-for-play
is that it's going to drive away much of the fringe, both those who are
new *and* those who have been around a while. Think about all those
Peers who only show up for one or two events a year now, but who are a
real joy when they do show up. (Leiftameon juggling, Peridot doing a
subtlety -- like that.) If they're presented with a requirement to keep
paying $20 a year in order to come to their one or two events, are they
going to do it? Some will; some won't. I *loathe* the concept of driving
these folks away.

(And bear in mind that some of these folks *do* come back again, after
a few years of inactivity. Hell, even *Patri* went through a period of
being relatively inactive, before he met Barbara. If we tell people
that they have to cough up the bucks or become *completely* inactive,
a lot of them will never be seen again, and we'll all lose for it...)
