greetings, In the last little while I have been reading the arguments
being tossed about here about period music. Pulling out my soap box,
I have been in the Society for a few years now and have entertained at
several bardc circles and feasts. in that time I have had a few people
grumble to me about how that song was not period and at the same time
others tell me how much they enjoyed my performance.
To me if the piece one is doing pleases the audience then my job is
done. I have successfuly accomplished my goal as a bard. I hve
entertained, Informed (hopfuly), and perhaps lightened a few spirits.
Now as to whether what I performed was period or not I can honestly say
that sometimes not but as long as it is not blatant like the opennig
line of a song I have heard many times around a bardic circle "oh the
year was 1778 how I wish I was in sherbrooke now....."
What I am getting at here is you have to know how to read an audience.
If you can't do that sit back and watch what others are doing, learn to
get a feel for it. Remember it always helps to have a little of both
sides of the coin in your repetoire, so that you always have something
to fall back on. Thanks for your time

In Service to Their Majesties I Remain
L Stragin MacGregor
Royal Bard of An Tir
