(I remember how it's said...) The version I learned is in three parts. The bass part just keeps singing over and over the five syllables above. The two other parts go into more lyrical detail. Maybe there is a publication (surely a recording!) of the _Roman de Fauval_ with this version of the song. Note that there are multiple manuscripts of _Roman de Fauvel_, and the music sometimes varies between them.
