It wouldn't bother me any in terms of thinking it Shouldn't Be Done.  I
might be perplexed, though.  I can certainly understand reading a period
work of great length.  But I expect the author to pretty much "know" his
own original poetry.  It was all in your head to start with, wasn't it?
