Hi, all --

Great discussion -- sorry I sort of disappeared -- I'm up to my neck
in preparing for performances at EK Coronation -- back after Sat.

One short observation: In the context of the current argument, the
only people who are using the word "authenticity" are those
complaining about it.

I would ask them to stop and consider for a moment, that maybe what
they are hearing is not necessarily what those people talking about
"*period*" works are saying.

Sweeping generalization: to those of us who play primarily or
exclusively early music, "period" means "from before <date>" (where
<date> is usually 1600 for us), while "authenticity" means
playing/performing such a work in a historically accurate style.

There is a difference between being asked to use historical material,
and being asked to play it in a historically accurate style.

There is a difference between arguing that one's material is in a
historical style and arguing that it is period.

Finally, there is a difference between those who make new music -- the
Trobadors -- and those who entertain -- the Joglars.

Joglars, be prepared to be held to a different standard when you start
doing the work of a Trobador. They are not the same.
