Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council Meeting, 3 May 1993

Meeting called to order at: 7:17 pm

Deputy Seneschal (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  I gave copies of 
the relevant portions of the membership list to Lord Li Kung Lo so he could 
see who is in the proposed Canton and Lord Theodwine of Faulconbridge so he 
could see who lives in Towers.

Arts and Sciences (Master Anton of Winteroak):  My report to Kingdom goes 
in this week.  The report is supposed to be condensed and sent to all the 
Arts and Sciences officers in the Kingdom.  Also, the information may go 
into an Arts and Sciences database in the future so someone could get a 
list of all the people working in a particular field.

Golden Gryphon (Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):
- - The next commenting meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 at Lady 
Caitlin Davies' home.  The letter isn't here yet, but it should be by the 
18th.  I will do the usual ride thing.  Come if you are interested in 
heraldry or think you might be interested.  - May Day heraldry was run by 
Alexander of Kiev.  Lots of volunteers helped out.
- - The Academy of the Rapier will need many heralds.

Knight Marshall (Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind):
- - There was one fighting event last month.
- - Fighter practice is now Wednesdays starting at 6:30pm and Sundays 
starting and 12:30pm at MIT behind Kresge.  The indoor practices at B.U. 
have helped establish our presence there.
- - I have gotten some feedback on why more people in the Barony don't fight. 
 I'm interested in hearing any idea no matter how crazy for how to keep 
people involved.  "We should fight more in this Barony."  [Someone 
responded:  "I thought that is what council is for."]
- - The East Kingdom does not recognize boffer fighting as an official 
martial activity.  If you participate, you do so at your own risk.

Chronicler (Lady Elayne Courtenay):
- - The June Miniscule will have a Pennsic Ride Board.  If you are can offer 
a ride or need one tell me who you are, both SCA and mundane names, when 
you are leaving, when you are coming back, and how many spaces.
- - The August Miniscule will be an Arts and Sciences issue.  The deadline 
for hard copy is July 15.  The deadline foe electronic submission, disk or 
email, is July 31.

Mistress of Fencing Lists (Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano):  We 
had 25 fencers in the tournament at May Day.  It was a round robin and the 
Baron won.

Historian-Librarian (Lady Caitlin Davies):  Volunteers are needed to 
transcribe some audio tapes with reminiscences of early Pennsic Wars.  Even 
if you only have time to do one side of one tape, please help.

Secretary (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Hi.

Magister (Lord Stefan Skywatcher):
- - There was a Gold Key table at May Day.  It was the first event for at 
least 8 people whom we knew about before the event.
- - There was a Council of Provosts meeting.  Fifteen people, including 
representatives from 5 boroughs attended.  We discussed the fall demo 
season, general issues of recruitment and retention, and suggestions for 
the 'Demo in a Box'. 

Hot line (Lord Taran of Windy Hill):  
- - Please remember to tell people you give the hot line number to that they 
should only call between 10am and 10pm.
- - Could people who attend Crown Tournament please let hot line know the 
results.  Every six months we get a flurry of phone calls from people who 
want to know.

Dance (Lord Daniel of Falling Rocks):  Dance practice will continue over 
the summer.  On May 12th we will attempt to hold an Italian Ball at 
practice, garb preferred.

Steward(Lord Colin Ursell):  All of the Baronial stuff is finally back in 
my basement after the recent events.  I am looking for suggestions for 
things we need, I need to replace some items and I would like to do all the 
purchases at once.

Marshal of Fence (Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  
- - There was a fencing tournament at May Day which was well run by Antonio 
Patriquin.
- - Wednesday practices are moving to behind Kresge with fighting practices 
starting this week.  Let me know in advance if you will need loaner gear.
- - Sunday practices will move outside in June.
- - Some people have expressed an interest in changing the practice schedule 
to make practices more accessible.  Talk to me if you have ideas.

Seneschal of the Towers(Theodwine of Faulconbridge):  The next meeting is 
Monday, May 17 at Lord Brendan and Lady Melinda's.  If you live in towers 
should come, you will be interested in the discussion.

Jongleurs (Lady Tibicen Blackmane):  Meetings may move to 16-310 in June 
because it is air conditioned.  More information to come.

Company of Bowmen(Lord Peter the Red):  Sunday practices continue at my 
home, but not on May 9.  We are looking for a practice site closer to the 
center of Carolingia, if you have any ideas contact me.  We need to have 
100 yards of safe shooting area with nothing immediately behind it.  Close 
to the T would be preferable.  If we can't find anything, we will go back 
to the Y camp in Hopkinton.  I have weeknight practices at my house by 
appointment only.  Lord Li Kung Lo has practices at his house by 
appointment only.  Call if you are interested.

Worshipful Company of Brewers and Vinters(Lord Brendan Olthursson 
Veassullurd):  At the April meeting we made at spring wine.  The May 
meeting will probably be on Sunday, May 23.  Lord Colin Ursell volunteered 
his home. Call Lord Aquel of Darksted Wood for final information.

Calligrapher's Guild(Master Anton of Winteroak):  I am continuing to hold 
meetings on college campuses.  I am trying to set up a time for the 
non-borough people together, possibly every other week at the Baron and 
Baroness's home.

Cooks Guild(Lady Caterina Sichling von Nurnberg):  The next meeting is May 
16 at Lady Johanna Dudley's.  The topic is small cakes.  Call here by May 
12 if you plan to attend.  The June meeting will be June 13, the topic will 
be German cooking.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers(Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For):  I now have two 
assistants, Lord Aleksandr Yevsha and Christian von Jauregk.  Anyone with 
an idea for doing a play with a classic script should talk to me.  
Autocrats should talk to us if they want something at their events.

Needleworker's Guild(Lady Nicolette Bonhomme):  Morgaine ran the meeting 
last month so I could deal with a school crunch.  The topic was buying 
commercial fabric.  The May meeting is now on May 16 at my home starting at 
noon.  The topic is buttons and button holes.  Call for directions or ask 
Frydherik by email.

Pike Company(Lord Thome de Laurent):  Not much has changed.

Storytellers (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  The next meeting is May 15 at my 
home.  The meeting will start at 7:30pm and probably run late since it will 
be Saturday evening.

Armorers Guild (Meister Frydherik Eysenkopf):  Sir Emeric Wendel the 
Diversified will open his shop on Saturdays from 1-5pm starting in June.  
Call ahead.

Fools Guild (Lord Christian von Jauregk):  I am now head of the Fools 
Guild.  If anyone wants to be heir apparent, I'll give them this beat up 
penny.  [Holds up coin.]

Peasants (Lord Daniel of Falling Rocks):  Harvest proceeds normally.

Duncharloch (Colin MacCenna):  I am the summer contact, but I don't know my 
address or phone number yet.

Fenmere (Daniel):  I am the summer contact.  My phone number is 893-9147.

Ivory Keep (Lord Justin du Coeur):  They have a new provost. [Rebecca 
Schoenberg].

Mitgaard (Teleri the Truthful):  I will be in Vermont over the summer, but 
I can still be reached by email or via Lord Anton of Winteroak.  Lady 
Rouxandra Mihail is also a summer contact.

Huntington Green (Thomas Endwere):  Hi.

Southbanke (Christian von Jauregk):  A lot of Southbanke people can be 
reached at 127 Harvard St. #2, Brookline.  Isabel D'Triana can be reached 
at aisha@buphy.bu.edu.

Order of the Daystar (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  
- - We have two new Daystar, Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind and Lady Morgaine 
ferch Cadwr.
- - We will be meeting on Friday, May 14 at the Baron and Baroness's home at 
7pm.  Contact a member of the order if you want to make a recommendation.

House Chat Gris (Sir Patri du Chat Gris):  Hi.

Autocrats of Events:

May Day (Daniel):  We had fencing and fighting tournaments.  We took in 
more money that had people signing the list.  We took in $168 and only had 
149 signatures.  I have lost and found.  Thanks to everyone who helped.

Academy of the Rapier (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  The event is May 
28-31.  I need people for setup and cleanup.  Since the event is 3 days 
long, I need everyone who attends to help out.  The cost is $34 for site 
fees and meals for the whole event, lesser amounts for shorter periods or 
without meals.  There will be two mini-events within the event, there will 
be a musician's cabin and archery.  "We love children, bring them."  I need 
someone to be in charge of the gate [found] and could use people to take 
charge of 2-3 major areas.  I have a list of the cooks, they could use 
help.  Contact the particular cook to volunteer.  Make your reservations 
now, so far I only have 13 reservations.

Islamic Dance, Arts, and Culture Event (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Siubhan 
asked me to announce this.  The event will be Saturday, September 11 from 
approximately 2-10pm at the Unitarian Church in Waltham.  The price will be 
approximately $10 with the feast and $4 for classes only.  There will be 
classes during the day and food and entertainment in the evening.  Siubhan 
needs teachers, people to write articles for a publication similar to the 
one she did for her last event, and entertainers.

Master Kobayashi Yutaka:  Southbanke is working on an event for January.

Baron and Baroness (Sir Patri du Chat Gris):  If anyone knows where we can 
get 1 1/2" metal disks of any reasonable metal, contact me.  I am looking 
for the names of specific places, not types of places.
 
Treasurer (Lady Rowan Kalkin):  We have $3540 in uncommitted funds.

Mistress of Lists (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  We had a tournament at 
May Day.  It was mellow.

Rapier Company (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  We have lots of new cadets.

Yelizaveta Medvedeva:  Middle eastern dance practices are happening.  This 
month they are on Thurday, May 6 and Thursday, May 20.  Everyone is 
welcome.


BUSINESS

Seneschal (Master Kobayashi Yutaka):  Lady Rennata MacDougall tells me that 
Dutchess Sedalia MacNare has made a preliminary decision on the boundaries 
of the Northern Principality.  It will be the present northern region.  
Other groups should petition for inclusion if they want to be part of the 
principality.  Since the sense of Council was to go along with whatever was 
suggested for boundaries, Carolingia will not be petitioning to join.  The 
principality basically runs from the northern border of Massachusetts, 
including extending that line into New York, north.  Duchess Sedalia will 
be holding a question and answer session about this at Northern Lights.


Master Kobayashi Yutaka read the Charter of Carolingia and he, Baron Patri 
du Chat Gris and others explained its meaning and history.


Lord Thome de Laurent:  I have done more research on demo possibilities.  
Octoberfest is up in the air.  September 11 is the Charles River Festival.  
This conflicts with the Islamic event.  I have talked to a few towns that 
seem amenable to having us.  If you have ideas for locations, talk to me.  
There is interest in a school demo in Andover.  They are doing a unit on 
medieval history in May and I'm looking for cultural people to help.


Master Kobayashi Yutaka:  The meeting dates and locations for the summer 
are:

SCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Patri du Chat Gris:  The Academia of the Rapier will hold its first meeting 
on May 6 at 7pm at my house.

Harald Longfellow:  The next woodworker's meeting is May 22 at the Buttery 
from 11am-3pm.  We hope to finish some of the benches and start talking 
about Pennsic furniture.

Diego Mundoz:  The shoe making meeting will finally happen in early June.  
Talk to me if you are interested so I can set a date.  In preparation, the 
trip to Old Sturbridge will happen on May 8.

Yaakov HaMizrachi:
- - I am no longer head of the Fools Guild, that honor is now Christian von 
Jauregk.
- - I will be going to the War of the Roses which is a royal progress event, 
but not a War this year and can give rides.  I will be leaving at mid-day 
on Friday.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:
- - I have a book I found at dance practice.
- - The second Friday of every month there will be a poetry gathering at my 
house to read and discuss poetry and the use of poetry in related arts.

Tibicen Blackmane:
- - The musician's activities at the fencing event are not being organized.  
Space is being provided and people should come with their instruments and 
music.  If you bring music, bring enough copies for everyone.
- - Borough people who are here over the summer should keep in touch, unlike 
a student activity the Barony doesn't shut down for the summer.
- - The Boston Early Music Festival is a week-long event in June.  It is a 
good place to buy instruments.
- - Think about what you would like to do for the Carolingian University and 
let me know.

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  New provosts should give me their names and 
addresses for the cover of the Miniscule.

Dante de Felice:  The Autocrat's Table will meet tomorrow at my place.  The 
topic will be what to do when you need to cancel an event.

Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  
- - Ailis Catriona Mac an Toisich was awarded the gold cord.
- - Seosamh MacDonald an Cruca O'Maille was made a member of the Doe's Grace, 
the Middle Kingdom's order for courtesy for the courtesy he has extended to 
the Middle Kingdom in teaching fence.

Catrin o'r Rhyd For:  On June 12th, we will have a party at our place where 
Duke Siegfried von Ho"flichkeit, member of the B.O.D. from the West Kingdom 
will be there telling stories about the early days of the SCA.

Justin de Coeur:  The Academia della Danza will meet on the usual days this 
month: Thursday, May 13 and Thursday, May 27.  The Academia will not meet 
over the summer.  In the fall, I'd like to do something different as a 
change of pace and work on getting more people interested in participating.

Christian von Jauregk:  The Carolingian map project continues.  It is 
currently in the pencil sketch stage.  The present way of scheduling 
working on this hasn't been working, so if you want to help, talk to me so 
we can set up a time.

Danulf Donaldson:  If you have any recommendations for the Perseus, talk to 
me or another member of the order.

Peter the Red:  
- - The Company of Bowmen has 3 new members: Natasha, Daniel, and Colin 
Ursell.
- - There will be no archery practice on Mother's Day. (May 9)
- - Sunday, May 16 during practice (10am-3pm) we will be planning for the 
archery at the fencing event.  I would like to have prizes that people 
created rather than buying something.  If you would like to make something 
that can be used as a prize, see me.

Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  I'm turning over to Colin Ursell a white 
shirt that was accidently picked up at university.  If it's yours, please 
claim it.

Bryttan:  
- - Do not send email for me to clerk@sug.org.  I will not get it and it will 
not bounce.  If you need to send me email, use psycho@csa.bu.edu
- - April 30, 1994 will be the Boston Brewers Association event.  This year's 
was excellent.


NON-SCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harald Longfellow:
- - The Mystic Seaport Music Festival is June 12 & 13.
- - Early music week at the Pinewoods music camp is July 17-24.  I have the 
phone number if interested.

Yaakov HaMizrachi:
- - Rivka and I are moving to DC probably at the end of June.  I'm job 
hunting again because my job fell through.
- - I will be having a storytelling party on Monday, May 10.  It is BYOB.  
Please do not bring food without clearing it with me first.  There will be 
non-SCA people there too so if you have any non-SCA storytelling you want 
to try, this would be a good time.

Godith Anyon:  My company has a job opening for someone with a Master's 
degree in the preventative aspects of child and adolescent health.

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  My event is at a Boy Scout camp.  This means that 
the site is DRY.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  I am still unemployed.  I have computer experience, 
some database programming, lots of UNIX.

Genevie`ve de Chanteloup:  I will be in eastern Europe this summer.  Talk 
to me if you want me to try to pickup stuff for you.  I will probably be 
visiting every museum in Poland.

Taran of Windy Hill:  A cautionary tale if you own PC's and sell them.  I 
bought a used disk drive recently that had a lot of the previous owners 
personal data on it.  If you sell your computer or a disk drive, reformat 
it first.

John McGuire:  There is a tent auction for large tents at the Deerfield 
Fairgrounds in New Hampshire this Saturday.

Sabine:  I am looking for a job in furniture or textile restoration.

Gwydden Lawen:  Fiammetta and I will be at Berkeley next year.  We will be 
leaving at the end of June.  We won't be able to make Pennsic because of 
orientation.
