Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council Meeting, 7 June 1993

Meeting called to order at 7:14 pm.

Deputy Seneschal (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  Hi.

Arts and Sciences (Master Anton of Winteroak):  
- - The Northern Region A&S newsletter Aurora Borealis came out at Northern 
Lights.  
- - The A&S issue of Pikestaff is still taking submissions.
- - The Kingdom A&S officer is resigning.  If you are interested in the 
position, write to both her and the royalty.

Golden Gryphon (Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):  Not a whole lot is happening.  
I was part of Lord Thome de Laurent's demo at the elementary school in 
Andover.  It was a lot of fun.  The kids knew more than I expected.

Knight Marshall (Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind):  There were no fighting 
events last month.  Attendance at fighter practice is up, but it is still 
anemic.  "We should fight more or at least worry that we don't."

Chronicler (Mistress Elayne Courtenay):  The Pennsic ride board will be in 
the June issue.  August will be the A&S issue.  The deadline for the August 
issue is mid-July for submissions on paper and then end of July for 
electronic submissions.

Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I need cover art.

Mistress of Lists (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  Hi.

Mistress of Fencing Lists (Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano):  
There was a tournament at the Academy of the Rapier, 36 fencers 
participated.

Historian-Librarian (Master Justin du Coeur):  The Historian says hi.  
She's in Cincinnati.

Secretary (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Hi.

Magister (Lord Stefan Skywatcher):  Summer is definitely here, not much is 
happening.

Steward(Lord Colin Ursell):  The Baronial stuff will rest quietly in my 
basement for the summer.  I plan on doing a complete inventory.  I will be 
moving at the end of the summer.

Seneschal of the Towers(Theodwine of Faulconbridge):
- - We fought as a unit at Boredom War.  It was a lot of fun.
- - The next meeting is Saturday, June 19 NOT the usual Monday.  It will be a 
cookout at my home.  The business meeting will be at 1pm.  There is room 
for fighting, fencing, and archery; but not all at once.  The cook out is 
potluck.  RSVP to Lady Melinda of the Weresheep to coordinate dishes.

Jongleurs (Lady Tibicen Blackmane):  The instrumentalists will be at dance 
practice this week.

Calligrapher's Guild(Master Anton of Winteroak):  The next meeting will be 
either June 16 & 17.  Contact me for the date and location.

Cooks Guild(Lady Caterina Sichling von Nurnberg):  The next meeting is 
Sunday, June 13 at Mistress Johanna Dudley's home.  The topic is German 
recipes.  Let Mistress Johanna know you are coming by June 9.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers(Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For):  There will be a 
performance of a mumming that Lord Franz Joder von Joderhuebel wrote 
sometime next year.  It has lots of female parts.  If anyone is running an 
event and wants drama done there, talk to me.

Master Justin du Coeur:  I've been acquiring books with period plays and 
would like to have a play reading some time.  Talk to me if you are 
interested so I can set a date.

Commedia del'Arte(Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind):  We continue you to 
"shower wit and romance on an otherwise dreary world".  Meetings are every 
Tuesday at 7pm at MIT in room 4-402.

Rapier Company (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  We are now meeting Sunday 
afternoons at 1pm behind Kresge Auditorium at MIT.

Fools Guild (Christian von Jauregk):  "You wouldn't believe the stuff we 
have planned for Boredom War this weekend!  [Boredom war was last weekend.]

Duncharloch (Colin MacCenna):  I am the summer contact.  [Matt Ender, 40

Mitgaard (Lady Rouxandra Mihail):

Order of the Daystar (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  We had a 
meeting last month.  There will be a poll this summer.

Order of the Moon (Master Kobayashi Yutaka):  There will be a meeting on 
Friday, July 9 at 7:30 at the home of the Baron and Baroness.  Contact Lady 
Gwendolyn of Middlemarch or Baron Patri du Chat Gris for meeting 
information.  Talk to any member of the order if you have a recommendation.

Autocrats of Events:

May Day (Daniel):  My report is in.

Academy of the Rapier (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  I just unloaded the 
car two days ago.  I don't know if the event made or lost money yet.  Some 
of the cooks still need to give me receipts.  I will have the report ready 
by next council.  A lot of people had a good time.

Islamic Dance, Arts, and Culture Event (Lady Siubhan nic Cruimein):  There 
will be classes in the afternoon and food and entertainment in the evening. 
 I have some teachers and am still looking for more.  I am looking for a 
name for the event.  The date is September 11 from 2pm - 11pm.  The site is 
the Unitarian Church in Waltham.  The fee is $5 for the afternoon classes 
only, $10 for the whole day.

Master Justin du Coeur:  I am running the feast and will be doing research 
over the summer.  If you are interested in helping, see me.

Baron and Baroness (The Honorable Barbara Viggiani Milanese):  Thank you to 
Lord Tibor of Rock Valley and Avelina Perceval for locating metal disks for 
the order medallions.

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  I would like to be reimburse for the 
medallions.  I spent $61.80 for 125 disks.  [Council approves the 
reimbursement.]

Steward-Hospitaller (Lord Li Kung Lo):  I am looking for a deputy who would 
ultimately take over this position.  You don't have to be a medic, but it 
helps.

Soothsayers (Lady Emmanuelle of Southbank):  There will be a meeting 
sometime this month.  Contact me for information.

Storytellers (Christian von Jauregk):  There will be a meeting on June 15 
at Lord Aleksandr Yevsha's home.

Marshal of Fence (Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  Fencing practice is 
Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons at MIT.  Loaner equipment is 
available.  We had an event with fencing last month.

Treasurer (Lady Rowan Kalkin):  We have $4500 in uncommitted funds.  $1957 
of that is actually available.

Seneschal (Master Kobayashi Yutaka):
- - The new insurance letter is here.  Destroy any copies you have of the 
1992 letter.  See me if you need a copy to show a site that we have 
coverage.
- - If you are going to appear on a radio show or publish an article in a 
wide distribution publication, you should let the Seneschal know in 
advance.  This is not to get approval, but so that I know how to respond to 
calls that come in as a result.  
- - There is a board policy that covers postings on the net.


Business

Christian von Jauregk:  I would like to run an event on April 23, the feast 
day of Saint George.  I'm looking for help with research on period 
festivals of the day.  If that doesn't work out, it will just be a normal 
event.  [Lady Marian of Edwinstowe points out that the date is also 
Shakespeare's birthday.]  I am trying to get the Norwood High School for 
the site.  [It is pointed out that the date is one week before the 
traditional date for the May Day event.  Christian acknowledged that he was 
aware of that, but would like to do the event on this particular date.]


Fujimoto Saburo:  I would like to run a Japanese event sometime in the 
fall, probably in November.


Alexander of Kiev:  I have an idea for an event and would like to know if 
people think it is a good idea.  It would be similar to the Academy of the 
Rapier except that it would be for heavy list.  I'll be away for two weeks, 
but contact me afterwards and tell me what you think.

Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I want to point out that the Academy of the 
Rapier was the most exhausting event I've ever run.  If you are going to do 
something similar, make sure you have adequate time and help.

Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  I am thinking about putting in a bid for King & 
Queens fencing championship next July.

Lord Thome de Laurent:  
- - Aongus Kei of Kintyre, Lady Fiammetta Adalieta di Damiano Leo, Lord 
Gwydden Lawen, Lord Tibor of Rock Valley, and I did a demo at an elementary 
school in Andover.  We came in on three separate days and did fighting, 
dance, and heraldry.  It went really well.
- - Possibilities for public demos are the Octoberfest, in conjunction with 
University and the Charles River Festival.  The autocrat of the September 
11 event doesn't think there is a problem with doing a demo the same day.
Hot line (Lord Taran of Windy Hill):


Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Right now it looks like no one is volunteering 
to run a Carolingian encampment.  This is probably a reflection on what 
happened last summer.  If you want to do your own thing, requests for a 
land map must be postmarked by June 12.  This doesn't commit you to 
anything.  The group requests must be postmarked by July 9.

Lord Yaakov HaMizrachi:  I could go down and grab land if someone else 
organizes the rest of the encampment.  Although, I'd need to make 
arrangements with the autocrat since land grab is on Saturday.


Master Justin du Coeur:  There was a discussion about the principality 
movement at Northern Lights.  The results of the straw poll showed the 
Northern Region strongly in favor of a principality and the Central Region 
mixed in feeling.  Mistress Sedalia is pursuing a Northern Region only 
principality.  Duke Randall wants to see the Central Region included in the 
principality and he intends to pursue that.  If you have an opinion, you 
should contact Mistress Sedalia and Duke Randall.

Lord Li Kung Lo:  After two months of deliberation, the Quintavian Council 
unanimously approved the Aschgar proposal which requires the transfer of 
Carsile, Holliston, Medfield, Walpole, and Wrentham to Carolingia.  The new 
canton would also include Concord, Sudbury, Wayland, Weston, Framingham, 
Nadick, Sherborn, and Dover.  It has been pointed out that Aschgar is 
almost identical to the original gerrymander district.  Objections from the 
Baron or Baroness of Carolingia, the Seneschal of Carolingia, or Mistress 
Sedalia would end the plan.  [Lord Li Kung Lo reads the letter he intends 
to send Mistress Sedalia requesting that the Canton of Aschgar be 
established and a number of comments are made about the specific wording.  
A straw poll to get the sense of council on whether there are major 
objections to the plan shows that the vast majority thinks the plan for 
creating Aschgar should go ahead.]


More Officer's Reports:

Company of Bowmen(Lord Peter the Red):  Thanks to Emilia Mazzo de Novella 
for letting us have archery at her event.  Thank you to the people who 
helped.  Archery practice continues on Sundays at my house, though not this 
weekend because of the King and Queens archery championship.  Also, by 
appointment practices occur at Li Kung Lo's home.  I am looking into a 100 
yard site for the period right before Pennsic.  I am looking into several 
haying feeds near my house.

Needleworker's Guild(Lady Nicolette Bonhomme):  Last month's topic was 
button and buttonholes.  The next meeting is Tuesday, June 22 and 
Jehanneton d'Abbeville's home.  [The address in the Liber is wrong, see 
below - A.P.]  We will discuss buttons again and also period seams.  The 
July meeting will be Thursday, July 22 at Lady Melinda of the Weresheep's 
home.

Armorers Guild (Meister Frydherik Eysenkopf):  Cardboard seems to work.


SCA Announcements:

Catrin o'r Rhyd For:  The June 12 party at our home is cancelled because 
Duke Siegfried von Hflichkeit will not be visiting then.  He will probably 
come in the fall instead and the party will be rescheduled.

Master Justin du Coeur:  Talk to me if you are interested in participating 
in a play reading so I can set a date.

Danulf Donaldson:  I have a large number of brewing bottles.  The first 
person who comes and collects them, gets them.

Anton of Winteroak:  Talk to me about the date of the next Calligrapher's 
guild meeting.  Also, session on the college campuses are continuing.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  I am planning on holding a bardic circle at 
my home where the topic is religion.  If you have religious material that 
you feel uncomfortable doing at events, come do it here.  We also may 
discuss religion in the SCA.  Talk to me if you are interested so I can set 
a date.

Siubhan nic Cruimein:  
- - Belly dancing classes continue every other Thursday at MIT in room 4-402. 
 The next class is June 17th.
- - I will host the annual Pennsic Pity/Peacenik party.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  Baron Patri has begun a discussion group on period 
rapier manuals and techniques.  If you are interested in participating, 
talk to him.

Tibicen Blackmane:  Alexander of Kiev, Caterina Sichling von Nurnberg, and 
I are about to move.  I could use volunteers to help Thursday and Friday 
evening.   [The new address is: 10 Palmer Street, Arlington, MA 02174]

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I have the lost & found from the Academy of the 
Rapier.

Yaakov HaMizrachi:  Rivka and I are moving to Washington, DC on June 21.  
We don't know where we will be living, but we have new email addresses:  
rivka@aol.com and hamizrachi@aol.com.

Harald Longfellow:  The woodworkers are not meeting this month.


General Announcements:
Godith Anyon:  I am planning a trip to see Much Ado About Nothing this 
Thursday in Harvard Square.

Rose Otter:  Gareth is trying to get together a paint ball group this 
summer.

Marian of Edwinstowe:  The Buttery Birthday party will be Saturday, June 
26.  People can arrive anytime after noon and the party will end before the 
subway closes down.  Bring food or drink.  "15 years of collective and 
still mostly speaking to each other."

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  There will be a reception in honor of 
Mustapha and Malice's wedding on Sunday, June 27 from 4pm - 9pm at the Sons 
of Italy Hall in Arlington.  RSVP to me.  It is a potluck.  Do not bring 
drinks or soft drinks.  Bring feast gear.  Garb optional.  There will be a 
post revel and my home afterwards.

Bryttan:  There may or may not be a spot in our apartment in September.  
Talk to Fujimoto if you are interested.

Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano:  On June 24 at Godith's and June 
28 at my place there will be tupperware parties.  Very useful for camping.  
These will be fundraisers for the building fund.

Jehanneton d'Abbeville:  I have moved.  [New address: 1114 Main Street #2, 
Waltham, MA 02159, 617-891-6587]

Elayne Courtenay:  My kiln is back on line for the time being.  I have a 
limited number of Carolingian Mugs available for $5/each.

Christian von Jauregk:  I have some Omni magazines I am giving away.

Danulf Donaldson:  We are having a July 4 party.  There is a pool.  It is 
discretely damp - you have to take you bottles away with you.  Bring food, 
a grill will be available.

Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  Thorgeirr Bollasson is acting in Camille at the 
Triangle theatre this month.  Performances are Wed-Sun at 8 pm and a 3 pm 
matinee on Sunday, except for the last weekend of the month when there are 
no Sunday performances.

Bryttan:  I am holding a lingerie party "because everyone needs something 
to wear to war".  Females only allowed.

Harald Longfellow:  
- - June 26 if anyone wants to help, I will be building a porch.  I also 
could use some help on the 25th.
- - June 12 & 13 is the Mystic Seaport Sea Chantey festival.  I am organizing 
a trip down.

Kobayashi Yutaka:  The next meeting is Monday, July 5 in MIT room 2-105.  
Yes this is the Monday of the holiday weekend.
