Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council Meeting, 6 September 1993

Meeting called to order at:  7:18 pm

Deputy Seneschal (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  It has been a busy 
summer I haven't gotten anything done.

Arts and Sciences (Master Anton of Winteroak):  I've been in good 
communication with me superior.

Golden Gryphon (Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):  
- All of the upcoming events are covered.
- Heraldic commenting will be Tuesday, September 14 at 7 pm.  This would be 
a good time for new people to show up and learn heraldry.  They are 
counting on Carolingia for a lot of the commenting for the central region 
letters and we have just had a number of heralds graduate and move out of 
the area.

Knight Marshall (Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind):  
- There were no local fighting events last month.
- There will be no fighting practice this Sunday because there is a world 
economic summit at MIT and security will be high.
- Remember when you talk to new people about fighting to tell them that 
armor doesn't have to cost a lot of money.  We can show people how to make 
cheap armor.
- Yesterday, the King came to fighter practice and there were only two 
other fighters there.  This is shameful.  We need to encourage people to 
come out and fight.

Chronicler (Mistress Elayne Courtenay and Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  
We quit.  Alexander of Kiev is the new chronicler.  He will be taking over 
starting with the October issue.

Mistress of Lists (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  I'm quitting.
Bryttan:  I am the new Mistress of Lists.  Hold a fighting event, I need 
something to do.

Mistress of Fencing Lists (Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano):  
Tell me if you are going to hold an event with fencing.

Historian-Librarian (Lady Caitlin Davies):  Hi.

Secretary (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Hi.

Magister (Lord Stefan Skywatcher):
- Things have picked up.  We have been getting lots of calls from 
non-students.  Introduce yourself to new people, talk to them when you see 
them.  
- I went to the Known World Chatelaine's meeting at Pennsic.  There was a 
good discussion that came up.  Some groups, including one or two in the 
East have had trouble because of confusion with another group that goes by 
'SCA', the Satanic Church of America.  When you talk to people make sure 
they know which SCA you are talking about.

Hot line (Lord Taran of Windy Hill):  We have been getting lots of calls 
for information.  On Tuesday, we had six calls, four of them were from 
people who found us through the yellow pages.  As far as I know, we are 
still one of two listings for the SCA anywhere in the country.

Dance (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  I was asked to announce that dance 
practice is continuing as usual.

Steward(Lord Colin Ursell):  I have moved.  The stuff moved with me.  If 
you are building things for the Barony, please discuss storage arrangements 
with the Steward in advance.

Steward-Hospitaller (Lord Li Kung Lo):  Hi.

Marshal of Fence (Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  Fencing is moving back to 
the Academy of Fence in Watertown as of this Sunday.  Practices will be 
from 5-9pm.  We will start a course of instruction for new people soon.  
Talk to me if you are interested.

Jongleurs (Lady Tibicen Blackmane):
- Practice is moving back to 4-402 starting next Monday.
- Vocalists meet at 8:30 pm.  You should come this week if you are 
interested in performing at University or Crown Tournament.  We will be 
starting to learn some new material.
- Instrumentalists meet at 7:00 pm.

Worshipful Company of Brewers and Vinters(Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  
Pretend I'm Aquel.  There will be a meeting on Sunday, September 19 at my 
(Morgaine's) home from 1-4pm.  You must be of age.  The topic will be mead 
production and problems.  Please bring a notebook, glasses and samples.

Calligrapher's Guild(Master Anton of Winteroak):  There will be a meeting 
on Wednesday, September 15 at the Baron and Baronesses at 7:30 pm.  Also, 
incidental instruction will be taking place a various times at Lady Ygraine 
of Kellswood's home and the college campuses.

Cooks Guild(Lady Caterina Sichling von Nurnberg):  The next meeting is 
scheduled for October 17 at Mistress Johanna Dudley's home.  Please RSVP to 
Johanna.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers(Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For):  There are a number of 
things coming up.

Master Justin du Coeur:  There will be a performance of "Knight of the 
Burning Pestle" around April.  It is a full-length Elizabethan play.  
Auditions will be on Monday, September 27 and Thursday, September 30.  
Rehearsal times will depend on the schedules of those who are cast.  Talk 
to me if you are interested in auditioning and can't make either date.  You 
can bring a short memorized piece to the audition but don't have to.  Talk 
to me or Lord Alexander the Storyteller for more information.

Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For:  
- At crown, we will be performing a mumming that Franz wrote about the 
muses.  We are short of females to play the muses and also need more male 
volunteers.  Lord Aleksandr Yevsha is directing this.
- There will be something at the Japanese event on November 18.  Talk to 
Christian von Jauregk if you are interested.

Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind): The world's greatest commedia del'arte 
troupe performed three times at the war.  If you are interested in 
participating, practices are Tuesdays at 7 pm in MIT room 4-402.

Needleworker's Guild(Lady Nicolette Bonhomme):  We met in July.  The next 
meeting will be September 23 at MIT in 4-402 at 7pm.  Lady Morgaine ferch 
Cadwr will be running on session on garb for beginners.  It will cover garb 
cut and fabric choices.  This will be followed by a shopping trip to 
Chinatown on September 25.  I am looking for people to host the October and 
November meetings.

Pike Company(Lord Thome de Laurent):  I've been busy with other problems.

Rapier Company (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  We may have lost the addresses for 
some of the people who joined the CRC in the last year due to a head crash. 
 If you are one of those people, talk to Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr.

Storytellers (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  The next meeting is Wednesday, 
September 15 at my home.

Armorers Guild (Meister Frydherik Eysenkopf):  Hi.

Fools Guild (Christian von Jauregk):  There will be a meeting on Friday, 
September 17 at Lord Harald Longfellow's home.  We guarded the royal 
encampment gate for about five seconds at war.

Fenmere (Daniel):  Hi.

Ivory Keep (Rebecca Schoenberg):  We're actually here.

Mitgaard (Teleri the Truthful):  I am back.

Southbanke ():  Hi.

Huntington Green ():  Hi.

Order of the Daystar (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  The poll that 
was discussed at the meeting will be out really soon now.

Order of the Perseus (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  Talk to me if you have 
recommendations.
Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  The order now has an official name and device.

House Silverwing (various):  Hi.

Autocrats of Events:

Middle Eastern Miscellany (Lady Siubhan nic Cruimein):  The event is this 
Saturday.  There will be classes in belly dancing from beginners to 
advanced.  There will also be classes in astronomy, music, and Middle 
Eastern garb.  Master Justin du Coeur is doing the feast.  There will be 
entertainment in the evening.  The fees are $5 for the afternoon classes 
only, $10 for all day.  It is at the First Parish Universal Unitarian 
Church in Waltham.  The site is accessible by bus and commuter rail and 
there is parking.

Carolingian University (Lady Elayne Courtenay):
- Wednesday, September 8 there will be a meeting for department heads.
- Wednesday, September 22 is the faculty rehearsal.  There will only be one 
this time around.
- Sunday, September 26 at noon will be the performer's rehearsal.  Talk to 
Tibicen if you can't make it or if you have a new act and would like to 
perform at University.
- The event is Sunday, October 10.  We have Sanders from 9am-3pm and the 
hall from 9am-6pm.  We will be open to the public for about 5 hours.  This 
will be the 14th session of the Carolingian University, *not* the 13th.
- The announcement didn't get into Pikestaff and the merchant deadline is 
before the October Pikestaff comes out.  If you know anyone who wants to 
merchant have them call me.  There is plenty of space for merchants.
- The Pikestaff announcement will have the hotline number because I will be 
moving before the event and don't know my new number yet.

Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I really don't want to run the children's 
activities this time.  Everything is mostly set up.  Please talk to me if 
you'd like to take this over.

Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  I will be talking to the faculty.

Moon Viewing Event (Fujimoto Saburo):  We are having a Japanese moon 
viewing event on the day of the new moon, this wasn't intentional.  The 
date is November 13.  I am trying to get teachers for classes.  I need 
people to help with clean up, set up, gate, teaching, and kitchen.  The 
site is the Brookline United Parish Church (the Duello site).  The fees are 
$6 off-board, $13 on-board and go up by $1 after October 31.

Feast of St. George Event (Christian von Jauregk):  I will have numbers and 
a site by next council.  There will be a fighting tournament.  The date is 
April 23.

Cambridge River Festival Demo (Lord Thome de Laurent):
- We will be putting up Baron Patri's pavilion as a back drop/changing 
area.  We have lots of space.
- I am looking for artisans who can attend and show of their crafts.
- The demo is this Saturday, September 11.  If you are dropping off stuff, 
you must be there before 10am.  The demo runs from 11am-5pm.  I have some 
parking permits for those who need them.
- We will be between JFK Street and Western avenue near the Harvard boat 
house.
- I'm looking for people to help with setting up the pavilion.

Shakespeare Oxford Society Demo (Master Anton of Winteroak):  Their meeting 
is November 12-14.  I am still working on the schedule.

Treasurer (Lady Rowan Kalkin):  We h ave $4277 in uncommitted funds, $3367 
in available funds.

Lord Li Kung Lo:  I think I'm an officer.  I believe the incipient canton 
issue is now at the B.O.D. level since the Board has to make the zip code 
transfers.  The heralds are making us change the name to Aschgar Reeve.

Master Kobayashi Yutaka:  I talked with Duchess Sedalia at the war.  She 
said she had already written a letter approving the plan and needed to 
write some more letters to try and make sure things go smoothly.

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Talk to me if you don't want to make the name 
change and I'll see what I can do.

Seneschal (Master Kobayashi Yutaka): 
-  Welcome to the new people.  There will probably be a lot more new people 
at the October council.  Carolingia is an old big place and we've done lots 
of things the way we have for a long time.  But we are open to new ideas.  
Talk to us.  Talk to many of us, we are not all the same.
- Autocrats should make sure they contact the Steward in advance about 
getting the Baronial stuff for their events.  Also, contact Lord Tibor of 
Rock Valley early in the planning.


New Business:

Lord Aleksandr Yevsha:  I would like to run a Russian event, Maslenitsa, at 
the end of February or the beginning of March.  It is a celebration of the 
beginning of spring.  Fencing.  Fighting.  Wearing of furs.  I have a cook 
and a head of gate.  I need help with set up, clean up, and reservations.  
I don't have a site yet.
(Council thinks it seems reasonable.)


SCA Announcements

Rowan Kalkin:
- I have financial forms for autocrats who need them.
- Use my home phone number if you need me for the next two months.  I will 
check my voice mail at work, but only once a week.
- This is my daughter Robin Olivia.

Harald Longfellow:  The woodworkers don't have a September meeting 
scheduled yet.  I will be calling members about a meeting time.  If you are 
interested and aren't on my list, contact me.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  I have been planning campsites, building seats and 
tables and things, and trying to convince myself that a man who can't sew 
garb can sew a pavilion.  I want to pick the brains of people who have done 
this or have ideas for doing this.  Talk to me.

Siubhan nic Cruimein:  A few more things about my event:  Bring a blanket 
to sit on the floor for dinner, very period.  The site is dry.  I can show 
you how to convert your European garb to Middle Eastern garb in five 
minutes.

Dante de Felice:  
- The Liber deadline is September 15.  I am looking for recommendations on 
a printer to print the Liber.
- The Autocrats' Table is being taken over by Tibor of Rock Valley.  The 
next meeting will be the mid or late October.  Autocrats' Table is a place 
where current and future autocrats can talk to experienced people to get 
advice.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  If you know of any outdated information in the 
Liber, especially for people who aren't around any more, please let me 
know.

Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  If you need a fencing demo at something, talk to me.

Tibicen Blackmane:  
- There will be live music at part of dance practice on Wednesday.
- Volunteer to help do something for university.
- About a week ago NPR ran a story on Weekend Edition about the SCA.  It 
was actually about the history of women in combat and included interviews 
with people in Bergental.  I got most of it on tape, talk to me if you want 
to hear it.  [The air date was August 29 if you want to try and get a 
transcript.]

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  The poetry meeting has been moved back to 
October 8.

Taran of Windy Hill:  Since people call hotline looking for phone numbers, 
please remember to let hotline know when you move especially if you are an 
officer.

Justin du Coeur:  
- For "Knight of the Burning Pestle", Alexander the Storyteller is the 
director and I am the producer.  The play has roles for women.  To repeat, 
auditions are on September 27 and 30.
- The Academia della Danza is restarting, probably on the 2nd and 4th 
Thursday of the month but that isn't definite.  I want to make it a bit 
more open.  We will be looking at reconstruction some new period dances -- 
pavanes and English Country dances.

Yelizaveta Medvedeva:
-  Middle Eastern dance practice will be weekly as of Thursday, September 
16.  There will be no practice this week.  Practices will be in 16-310 
until further notice.  This is a class and you don't need to know anything 
in order to come.  We start at 7:30pm.
-  Anyone interested in Middle Eastern drumming should talk to me.  We make 
start a drumming practice, possible before the Middle Eastern dance 
practice.

Catrin o'r Rhyd For:  To summarize upcoming theatrical events:  For the 
mumming at crown, talk to Aleksandr Yevsha.  For the Japanese play, talk to 
Christian von Jauregk.  For "Knight of the Burning Pestle", talk to Justin 
du Coeur.

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I will be doing Pikestaff.  Siubhan nic Cruimein 
and Radegund von Feuchtenstadt will be my drop dead and editing deputies as 
a pair.  Tibor of Rock Valley and Dante de Felice will be my deputies for 
local groups.  Franz Joder von Joderhuebel will be head typist.  I still 
need hosts for lick and stamp parties, typists, lick and stampers, and 
fundraising ideas.  The deadline for my first issue is Christmas Day.  The 
first lick and stamp party be on January 18 at Harald Longfellow's home.  I 
will be having a couple of organizational meetings.  The first will be 
right after the October council meeting.


Other Announcements:

Harald Longfellow:  
- The Early Music Series at the Newton Free Library will continue on the 
4th Sunday afternoon of each month.  I don't have the schedule yet.
- I have several extra industrial sewing machines and blind stitchers, if 
you are interested in one talk to me.
- I am involved in a vintage dance group, 19th century and ragtime dance, 
on the second Sunday of the month, except this month.
- I am looking for people who can do tech support for Macs, PCs, and UNIX.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  I am moving in about a month.  In 
preparation, I will have a yard sale on Friday, September 17 starting at 
7pm.  There is no yard and no sale.  I'm giving the stuff away.

Juliana d'Antioche:  If you recognize me, I'm back.  If you don't, I'm new. 
 I am still looking for a job in user support.

Marta:  
- I am still looking for a place to live, preferable on the Red Line.  $350 
is the upper end of the price range.  My number is 629-2330.  I am looking 
fairly urgently.
- On September 25 I am having a party in honor of my birthday.  No presents 
but bring food and drink.  The address is 745 Somerville Avenue #2.

Fioretta Luzzatto:  We are having a yard sale on Saturday, September 18th.  
There will be an SCA preview/potluck dinner on Friday, September 17th at 7 
pm.  If you have stuff of your own you would like to sell, you are welcome 
to bring it.  You can tag it and we will sell it for you for a small 
commission or you can show up on Saturday and set up with your stuff and 
sell it yourself.

Christian von Jauregk:  Yaakov HaMizrachi is employed.  He got the job he 
originally went to DC for.

Bryttan:  
- I have a real name now:  Torogene of the Steppes.
- My shipping service will happen for war again next year.
- I will need a job after October 15, I'm looking for secretarial type 
stuff.

Susan MacGregor:  I have more information on Janet Arnold's lectures in 
Rhode Island.  They are free.  The dates are Thursday, September 30 at 4 pm 
"Dressmaker's Craft"; Friday, October 1 at 4 pm "Rich and Fantastical", and 
Saturday October 2 "Supporting Features - Corsets and Petticoats" and 
something on 18th century clothing.  I don't have any more information on 
the lecture at the Museum of Fine Arts.  That one is the evening of October 
6 and the topic is "Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlocked".  There is a fee, 
but there is a discount if we go as a group.  Talk to me if you are 
interested.  On October 2, in addition to the Janet Arnold lecture, there 
is a Costumers Society of American symposium.  The fee for that is $25.  
Ask me if you have any questions.

(?) Boris Petrovich and Nesta ferch Meriadoc Hartley had a baby, Colin 
Stanfill, 8lbs 3 oz, born at 4:02 am on August 19.

Kobayashi Yutaka:  The next council meeting is on October 4 in MIT room 
4-270.
