Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council
Meeting, 4 October 1993

Meeting called to order at:  7:20 pm


Deputy Seneschal (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  If
possible, can the people at M.I.T. please try to put up signs
when a meeting is not in the usual place.

Arts and Sciences (Master Anton of Winteroak):  There has been a
shortage of people applying for the Beneficium.

There is a lunar eclipse at the end of November.

Golden Gryphon (Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):  Things are going
well.  A fair number of people showed up for the last commenting
session.  The next commenting meeting is on October 14 at Caitlin
Davies' home.

Events are under control.

Knight Marshall (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  There were no fighting
events last month.

After last Council, a number of people came up to Earl Sir
Sebastian Nightwind and told him, ``don't worry, we'll hold a
fighting event.''  He's be happier if fighting was simply a
routine part of an event.

There will be a fighting demo at the Carolingian University this
Sunday.  Fighters are needed.  Remember this is a public demo and
not fighting practice.  Fighting practice is cancelled this
Sunday.

Torogene of the Steppes:  Fighting practice will move indoors
after Crown Tourney.  The day and time are still T.B.A.  The
indoor site will be the B.U. armory.

Chronicler (Alexander of Kiev):  Subscriptions are not what they
should be.  Contact me if you want a subscription.

I need contributions.  Write about what you do.  Write about what
you read.  Give me covers.

Mistress of Lists (Torogene of the Steppes):  Hi.

Mistress of Fencing Lists (Guendalina Francesca di Antonio
Cristiano):  Hi.

Historian-Librarian (Lady Caitlin Davies):  We continue to
accumulate things.  I have a complete run of the Miniscule and a
nearly complete run of Pikestaff from their inception.

If you have the site book, please let me know.  There are people
who need to use it.

Secretary (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Hi.

Magister (Lord Stefan Skywatcher):  The Cambridge River Festival
Demo was a success.  So far we have had at least 5 inquiries as a
result.

There are several new people here tonight.

Contrary to popular rumor, there are people at Felding.

Dance (Lady Roselyne Sarah L'Estrangere):  Dance practice
continues as usual, Wednesdays at 7:30 in MIT room 16-310.  Tell
your friends.

Steward(Lord Colin Ursell):  Hi.

Steward-Hospitaller (Lord Li Kung Lo):  Hi.

Marshal of Fence (Lord Corwyn ap Gruffith Cynnil):  Fencing
practice will begin at 6pm instead of 5pm this Sunday only due to
the Carolingian University.

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  There will be a fencing demo at
University.

Seneschal of the Towers(Lord Brendan Olthursson Veassullurd): 
Meetings are the third Monday of the month.  This month's meeting
is at my home.  Once again we have scheduled activities for after
the meetings.  Call Theodwine of Faulconbridge for more
information.

The Seneschal, Theodwine of Faulconbridge, is married as of last
week.

Jongleurs (Lady Tibicen Blackmane):  Vocalist practice is
cancelled next Monday.  The instrumentalists will be meeting and
may run longer than usual.  It would be a good time for newcomers
interested in joining the instrumentalists to come.

The instrumentalists will be performing for the second half of
dance practice this week.

Company of Bowmen(Lord Peter the Red):  Practices continue on
Sunday from 10am to 2pm at my home.  Also, Lord Li Kung Lo and
Lady Ygraine of Kellswood have practices at their home by
appointment only.  Regular practices will continue during the
winter.  When the weather is bad, we will do indoor activities. 
We have been having some beginners attend practice and have been
doing lots of royal rounds, lots of teaching, and some fun
shoots.  There will probably be at least two road trips in the
coming months, one to Rivendell and one to a mundane 3-D shoot.

There is no practice this Sunday due to the Carolingian
University.

There is an archery event in Malagentia on October 16, the
Harvest Moon Shoot.

Lord Li Kung Lo:  The Bay State Archery Association runs mundane
3-D shoots for people who shoot bare bow.  The next shoot is
October 31.  The cost is about $6.  Contact me for directions. 
No crossbows.

Worshipful Company of Brewers and Vinters(Lord Brendan Olthursson
Veassullurd):  The next meeting is Sunday, October 24 at Sir
Michael of York's home.

Calligrapher's Guild(Master Anton of Winteroak):  The next
meeting is Wednesday, October 13 at the Baron and Baroness's home
at 7:30pm.  Mitgaard has been actively doing calligraphy and
their may be things happening on some of the other campuses.

Cooks Guild(Lord Brendan Olthursson Veassullurd):  The next
meeting is October 17 at Mistress Johanna Dudley's home.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers(Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  I am directing
a mumming written by our own Lord Franz Joder von Joderhuebel at
Crown Tourney.  It is a presentation by the 9 muses featuring a
reconstruction of a dance of the 9 muses.

Master Justin du Coeur:  
Lord Aleksandr Yevsha:  Il Sebastiani, the World's Greatest
Commedia del'Arte troupe meets every Tuesday at MIT in room 4-
402.  We have performances at the Carolingian University, Crown
Tournament, the Shakespeare Oxford Society, and Anton's wedding. 
We now have space to rehearse people who are not in the current
scenario.  Help bring light to a drab and dreary world.

Pike Company(Torogene of the Steppes and Lord Aleksandr Yevsha): 
We're the new commanders of the pike company.  There will be a
pot luck social and organizational meeting on November 6. 
Details will follow.

Rapier Company (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  Hi.

Storytellers (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  The next meeting is
Friday, October 15 at my house.  We will be hosting the borough
of Mitgaard.  Bring seasonal stories.  ``No hockey stories.''

Fools Guild (Christian von Jauregk):  We've been invited to be
foolish at crown.  I have a script for the shtick and need more
people to help.  We will be practicing on Monday evenings at Lady
Siubhan nic Cruimein and Lady Radegund von Feuchtenstadt's home. 
We also need help with sewing and some yellow fabric.

Peasants (Lord Daniel of Falling Rocks):  We got rocks.

Duncharloch (?):  We had a demo.  Thanks to everyone who helped.

Felding (Sun Namkung):  Since we did not hold Falling Leaves, we
are thinking about holding a Falling Snow event in February and
March.  [It was pointed out that the Spring schedule is starting
to get full.]

Does anyone know where we can get a used sewing machine?

Ivory Keep (Rebecca Schoenberg):  We had our freshman activities
fair.  We will be bringing a small group to university.

Mitgaard (Teleri the Truthful):  We have 30 people going to Crown
Tournament.

Southbanke (Conor MacKain):  Hello.

Huntington Green (Thomas Endwere):  Hello.

Order of the Daystar (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  Hi.

Order of the Perseus (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  If you have
recommendations, let me know.

House Chat Gris, House Skold, House Silverwing, House Windsmeet,
Domus Phonicis, House Aelwyd: Hi.

Autocrats of Events:


Middle Eastern Miscellany (Lady Siubhan nic Cruimein):  The event
happened and the reports are in.  Thanks to the entertainers,
teachers, and everyone who helped, especially Master Justin du
Coeur and Lady Caitlin Davies who spent all their time in the
kitchen.  The event made $161 and change.  We made money because
we scaled back the numbers for the feast when the number of
advance reservations was low and because Justin priced the feast
at Star Market and bought at Market Basket.

There was a problem with clean up.  Not many people stuck around
and a couple of individuals did almost all the dishes.  I hope
this isn't a trend.

Carolingian University (Lady Elayne Courtenay):
---Parking in the garage is no longer free, it will be $1.50 for
the day.
---We need to put down a $200 security deposit on Sander's
Theatre.  We should get it all back after the event.
---When people pay for admission they will be asked if they want
to donate $.50 to the Sander's Theatre Restoration Fund.
---We should have a spot in the Globe Calendar.  After they lost
our listing the last time, they have called several times to
confirm this time around.  We should also have some listings in
other local publications.  If you hear about University on the
radio, let me know what station.  I want to know who actually
aired our announcement.
---The caterers will be coming back again with the same set up as
last time.
---We need help with postering.
---The event will be from 11am to 4pm.  Activities in Sanders
will take place from 11am to 3pm.

Lady Tibicen Blackmane:  
---We have fewer performers than last time.  If you want to
perform, talk to me.
---Set up begins at 10am.
---Poster aggressively.

Moon Viewing (Fujimoto Saburo):  The event is November 13 at the
Duello site.  The event is T accessible.  I am looking for
teachers and volunteers.
Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella is now the site autocrat.  I am
running the kitchen.  You can give reservations to either of us.

Christian von Jauregk:  I am running a play, Narukami at the
event and need performers.  There are 6 roles; one must be male,
one must be female and the other 4 can be either.

Maslenitsa (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  This event re-creates the
celebration before the beginning of Lent and their will be period
games including an ice sliding on your belly competition.  I am
still looking for a site.  The event will be either the last
Saturday in February or the first Saturday in March.

Feast of St. George (Christian von Jauregk):  I need a site.  It
must have a kitchen and space for fighting.  I am trying to get
the Order of the Company of St. Michael to run the tournament.  I
have talked to the Baroness about perhaps reinstituting the
Ladies' Champion of Carolingia.  Traditionally, a Feast of St.
George tournament involves the winner fighting a dragon.  The
dragon could be anything from a dragon kite to a mechanical
dragon.  I'm looking for suggestions. 

Shakespeare Oxford Society Demo (Master Anton of Winteroak): 
Detailed planning will take place immediately after university. 
Some people from the Shakespeare Oxford Society will be at
University to help them figure out what they would like us to do.

Baron and Baroness (Sir Patri du Chat Gris and The Honorable
Barbara Viggiani Milanese):  Hi.

Treasurer (Lady Rowan Kalkin):  We have $4065 in uncommitted
funds, $3100 in available funds.   

Autocrats of upcoming events should get the financial forms from
me.

Each chartered guild gets $50 a year from the barony.  All you
have to do is give me the receipts.

Needleworker's Guild(Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  There were
about 6-10 new people at the meeting last month where we
discussed fabric and garb for beginners.  I will take the show on
the road to any borough that wants me to come.

Marshal of Fence (Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  Next Sunday's
practice will start at 6 pm due to University.

Liber(Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):  Data entry is finished.  The
price is not yet set but will probably be the same as last year,
$1.00 in person or $2.50 by mail.  There were a lot of extras
last year so this year's print run will be smaller.  The Liber
should be ready this weekend, but we will not be bringing it to
University because the event is too public.  We will try to get
them around to activities  so people can buy them.

Fenmere (Daniel):  Hi.

Seneschal (Master Kobayashi Yutaka):  Welcome to the new people.

New Business:


Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  I would like to run an event on
February 5.  It would be a western European late middle ages
event.  The site would be the Cambridge armory.  There would be
fighting.  The fees would be $5 off or out board and $9.00 on
board.  The kitchen isn't very big so dinner will be small.  This
would be a good event to bring your own food.

SCA Announcements


Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  I have a 10 x 12 carpet I can
give to someone who wants to make carpet armor.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  The next Autocrats' Table is November 2 at
7pm at my house.  Be on time or call ahead if you want to be
included in the pizza order.  I am looking for topic suggestions. 
You don't have to have an event in the works to come.  We can
also use input from people who have experience running non-SCA
events.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  I am having a poetry party on
October 8 at 7pm at my place.

Steffan ap Cennydd of Silverwing:  I am in charge of heraldry for
Crown Tourney.  If you want to help, see me at the event.

Justin du Coeur:  The Academia della Danza is resuming with a
sightly different format.  Anyone is welcome.  We'll be working
on reconstructing Allemandes and Pavanes from English sources. 
Meetings are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.  The next
meeting is October 14 at 7:30.  We will be meeting in 4-402 for
now.

Knight of the Burning Pestle still needs more people.  Additional
auditions will be held on October 13 at MIT in a room to be
announced.

Caitlin Davies:  If you have the site book, please let me know. 
There are people who need it.

Juliana d'Antioche:  I am looking for a job in technical or user
support.

Anton of Winter Oak:  The next calligrapher's meeting is
Wednesday, October 13 at the Baron and Baroness's home at 7:30pm.

Elayne and I are moving on Saturday, October 16 and can use some
help.

Siubhan nic Cruimein:  I have lost and found from my event: feast
gear and a pin.

Yelizaveta Medvedeva:  Middle Eastern drum practice is on
Thursdays at 6:30pm in MIT room 16-310.  Bring your own drum.  A
pickle barrel works well if you don't have one.  If enough people
are interested, we could put in a whole sale order to Mid-East
Manufacturing.

Middle Eastern dance practice is on Thursdays at 7:30pm in MIT
room 16-310.

Christian von Jauregk:  If you will help with the foolishness at
Crown, I can provide transportation.

Gideon Alexandru de Sighisoara:  Benjamin di Rosa is once again a
Carolingian.

Li Kung Lo:  The phone numbers listed in Pikestaff for the
Kingdom Seneschal are wrong.  The correct number is 609-783-4948.

Alexander the Storyteller:  I'm looking for a true medieval font
for my computer.

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  There will be a brief Pikestaff
organizational meeting after Council tonight.  From January on,
reserve the 18th of the month for the Pikestaff lick and stamp
party.

Fujimoto Saburo:  There is a Latin study group meeting on Sundays
from 7-9pm at MIT in room 16-310.  See me or Tibicen Blackmane
for more information.

Danulf Donaldson:  Merlin died.  This is our new puppy, Pooh
Bear.

Patri du Chat Gris:  The Rapier Academy [which studies period
rapier manuals and techniques] will be meeting on the 1st and
3rd.  The next meeting is on October 7 at 7pm.  We will be
reviewing and going up to page 128.  This would be a good time
for new comers to get involved.

Avelina Perceval:  I am in charge of clean up for University. 
Please remember that because of the room scheduling, we need to
be out of Sanders Theater before the event ends and I will need
help a 2:30 to clean up Sanders.

Other Announcements


Tibor of Rock Valley:  I have a used caravan for sale.  It is in
good shape, but old.  Talk to me if you are interested.

Torogene of the Steppes:  I will need a job starting next month,
something secretarial or in tech support.

Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano:  We are having a
Halloween part on Saturday, October 30 running until sometime on
Sunday.

Aleksandr Yevsha:  The sixth annual House Sinister Mad Monster
Masquerade Bopping Bloodbath and Rock 'n' Deadly Roll Halloween
Party will be Friday, October 29 from 8pm until I throw everyone
out.

Reynard des Montaignes:  I am looking for a job in engineering,
conservation, pollution control, technical writing, computer
programming or carpentry.

Pamelina of Avon:  My lord is selling a Mitsubishi Montaro for
sale.  Call 282-1875.

Avelina Perceval:  There is a group at MIT, the Educational
Studies Program, which is running a program for high school
students on November 20 and 21 where the students can come in and
take 1 hour classes on whatever people want to teach.  They are
looking for teachers.  The deadline for applications is the end
of this week.  Talk to me if you are interested.

I am participating in the City Year Serv-a-thon, a fund raiser
for the City Year youth service corps.  You may have seen
publicity about the program in the papers.  Talk to me if you
would like to sponsor me or would like information about City
Year.

Thomas the Unnamed:  I need to implement an inventory tracking
system.  If you have any advice, talk to me.
