Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council Meeting
6 December 1993
Meeting called to order at: 7:20 pm


OFFICER REPORTS

Deputy Seneschal Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  The map project is 
still in progress.  The Deputy Kingdom Seneschal in charge of groups send 
me a list of which zip codes the kingdom things belong to Carolingia, 
Quintavia, and Smoking Rocks.  I am going over the list and will be 
sending back a list of the zip codes we think we have and the unclaimed 
zip codes that the other groups should claim.

Arts and Sciences Master Anton of Winteroak:  I have a report due in.

Golden Gryphon Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Life is under control.  We 
held a submissions night las month.  The next commenting meeting is 7pm 
on Tuesday, December 14.  If you let me know in advance, I can give rides 
from Alewife.

Of the upcoming events, only my event doesn't have a herald in charge.

You don't need to be a herald to do heraldic things like be a court 
herald or be a list herald.  You only must be an official herald if you 
are taking money for submissions.

Knight Marshall Torogene Kazakh:  There will be no fighter practice this 
Sunday due to the Pearl Harbor day party.  There may be practice this 
Wednesday.

Chronicler Alexander of Kiev:  Thanks to Torogene Kazakh for typing the 
non-electronic submissions.

I am looking for a deputy to be in charge of submissions.

Mistress of Lists Torogene Kazakh:  No fighting events last month.

Mistress of Fencing Lists Lady Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano: 
 No fencing events last month.

Historian-Librarian Lady Caitlin Davies:  Hi.

Secretary Lady Avelina Perceval:  Lady Guendalina Francesca di Antonio 
Cristiano and Thomas the Unnamed will be taking over the secretaries job. 
 Guendalina will be taking and typing the minutes and Thomas will be 
taking care of the electronic distribution.

Hot line Lord Taran of Windy Hill:  Thanks to Torogene Kazakh for being 
our most frequent caller.  We are still getting calls from people who 
find us via directory assistance.

Dance Lady Roselyne Sarah L'Estrangere and Lord Daniel of Falling Rocks:  
There will be no dance practice on December 29.  Dance practice will 
occur the rest of the month and start again the first Wednesday in 
January.

Steward-Hospitaller Lord Li Kung Lo:  As of Sunday, the paperwork will be 
completed and all the equipment will be transferred to Lady Arianwen 
ferch Gawaine.

Marshal of Fence Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  There will be no fencing 
practice on December 26.

At the February 5 event, there will be an auction to raise money for 
fencing.  I will be asking people for donations.

Seneschal of the Towers Theodwine of Faulconbridge:  I have email.

The December meeting will be a Wassail in garb at my home.  We will be 
trying to do stuff from different periods.  It isn't T accessible, but if 
you call me I will try to arrange rides.

Worshipful Company of Brewers and Vinters Lord Brendan Olthursson 
Veassullurd:  There will be no meeting this month.  The next meeting is 
on January 30 at my new place.  We will be doing active production.

Company of Bowmen Lord Li Kung Lo:  Lord Peter the Red and Lord Colin 
Ursell are the newest Grand Master Bowmen of the East Kingdom.

Calligrapher's Guild Master Anton of Winteroak:  The next meeting is 
Wednesday, December 8 at the home of the Baron and Baroness.

Cooks Guild Lady Dante de Felice:  There will be no December meeting.  
The next meeting is January 23 at my place.  The topics are sauces and 
carving lessons.  The February meeting will be on the 27th at Mistress 
Johanna Dudley's home.  The topic will be pork.  The March meeting will 
be on March 20, location TBA.  The topic will be pasta.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers Lady Caitlin Davies:  Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For 
is looking for people who want to do performances for the February and 
March events.  Because she has her own projects, she is looking for 
someone to direct the mummings at those events.

Lord Alexander the Storyteller:  We need someone to play the male 
romantic lead in ``Knight of the Burning Pestle.''

Commedia del'Arte Master Anton of Winteroak:  We are just finishing 
casting for a performance at Birka.  It's too late to be in this 
performance, but if you want to get involved in Commedia you should come 
to practices anyway.

Needleworker's Guild Lady Nicolette Bonhomme:  We met last month.  I am 
coming to the conclusion that I don't have the time to do this job 
properly and go to school so at least until I graduate Jehanneton 
d'Abbeville will be taking over. 

Jehanneton d'Abbeville:  I have a couple of ideas for topics.  Let me 
know if you have any suggestions.  The next meeting will be sometime in 
January and the topic will be smocking.

Pike Company Lord Alexander of Kiev:  We had a successful brunch in 
November.  I'm going to do it again.  On Saturday, December 18 there will 
be brunch and armor making at my house.

Talk to me or Torogene Kazakh if you think you are a member of the Pike 
Company.  We will put you on the list.  We will be expecting a minimum 
participation level to remain a member.

The Pike Company will be going to Pennsic and will help members get to 
Pennsic.

There is now a Pike Company email list, to join send a message to 
pike-co-request@mit.edu.

Rapier Company Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr:  Lord Danulf Donaldson is 
resigning as Captain of the Carolingian Rapier Company.  There are two 
candidates for the position, Arglwydd Corwyn ap Gruffith Cynnil and 
myself.  If you have an opinion on who should be the new Captain, talk to 
the Baron or Danulf by mid-January.

Storytellers Lord Alexander the Storyteller:  The November meeting feast 
was a rousing success.  The next meeting is Wednesday, December 15 at 
7:30 at Lord Aleksandr Yevsha's home.  Bring a story or come to listen 
and bring food or drinks.  Call Aleksandr for directions.

Fools Guild Christian von Jauregk:  We're being good and not doing 
anything in December.

Peasants Lord Daniel of Falling Rocks:  It's cold.

Ivory Keep Rebecca Schoenberg:  Hi.

Felding Lady Siubhan nic Cruimein:  Felding asked me to announce that 
since they can't get Alumni Hall in April they are going to do something 
small in April, but it may not be an official event.

Duncharloch Colin MacCenna:  Hi.

Mitgaard Teleri the Truthful:  On January 17, we will hold a Castle.  
This will be like the one held last year.  The idea is that people are 
snowed in and working on projects.  Bring along any projects you would 
like to work on or would like other people to help you with.  The time 
and location are TBA.

Southbanke Lady Isabel D'Triana:  I am still not the provost.  The real 
provost is Brian Filgore.

Order of the Daystar Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  Hi.

Order of the Moon Master Kobayashi Yutaka:  There will be a meeting on 
Friday, December 10 at the Baron and Baroness' home.

House Windsmeet several:  Hi.

House Aelwyd Lord Corwyn ap Gruffith Cynnil:  Hi.

House Silverwing Baron Steffan ap Cennydd of Silverwing:  Hi.  Happy 
holidays of your choice.

AUTOCRATS OF EVENTS

Carolingian University Mistress Elayne Courtenay:   --- I have reports 
and receipts.  The second time around the weather was better and the 
bureaucracy wasn't.  The rules changed as late as the week before the 
event.  I'm recommending that, if we do this again, the autocrat should 
be a Harvard student.  Lord Gwydden Lawen and Lady Genevieve de 
Chanteloup did a wonderful job dealing with Harvard.

--- The box office total was $989.42.  We cleared approximately $450 so 
we were about $50 short of breaking even for both events.

--- We've gotten several people who are interested in the SCA as a result 
of the event.

--- The Boston Globe put University in the ``Best Bets'' column for the 
weekend.

Moon Viewing Fujimoto Saburo:  I have the financial report.  I'm still 
working on the event report.  There were about 70 people at the event.  
It lost $97.10.  Thanks to everyone who helped.

Winter Frolic Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Everything is going well.  I 
have a site contract and a budget and my first emergency.  My head cook 
had an attack of real lifeitis.  Lord Dhughall MacAran in now the head 
cook.  There will be:

--- an auction to benefit fencing

--- a fencing tournament

--- a rattan tournament -- This will be an ransom tournament so fighters 
should bring an appropriate ransom.

--- archery -- the backstop will be the building.  There is space for a 
20-30 yard range.

--- dancing

--- a poetry contest organized by Nesta ferch Meriadoc Hartley

--- Baronial Court

--- a spinning corner -- Baroness Margarey will be coming and will teach 
anyone who is interested

--- a feast -- the kitchen isn't that great so there will only be 100 
on-board spaces

--- perhaps a mumming and a performance by the jongleurs

Talk to me if you want to do organize other activities.

The site is dry because the city of Cambridge will not give one day 
liquor licenses.  The rumored gathering of brewers to taste their output 
will not be officially happening.

Maslenitsa Yelizaveta Medvedeva:  The date has been changed to avoid 
conflicting with the Black Rose Ball.  The new date is Saturday, March 
12.  The site is the Brighton High School.  It is T accessible.  Lady 
Arianwen ferch Gawaine is the head cook.  We are working with Lady Catrin 
o'r Rhyd For on the possibility of doing a period Russian religious play. 
 The tentative prices are $3.50 for the site fee, an additional $2.50 for 
the day board, and an addition $6.00 for the feast.  Lord Aleksandr 
Yevsha thinks we can get the gym and showers for fighting, but really 
wants to hold the fighting outdoors because it is ``very Russian.''

Feast of St. George Christian von Jauregk:  Lady Dante de Felice can't 
attend so I need a new head cook.  I am also looking for a new site 
because of concerns about the current site.  I will either get a new site 
or decide to use the current one by next council.

The Incipient, Incipient Canton of Aschehyrst Lord Li Kung Lo:  Our first 
meeting will be December 17 at 7:30 pm at my house.  Our meetings are 
open to all interested parties.  We are hoping to officially be published 
as an incipient canton as of January.  I'm not sure of incipient groups 
can vote at curia.  [The people who know about such things indicated that 
they could.]

Baron and Baroness The Honorable Barbara Viggiani Milanese:  Hi.

Magister Lord Stefan Skywatcher:  I've gotten several referrals from the 
hotline.

I am trying to fill in gaps in the demo box.  The guilds are under 
represented so I will be asking the guilds to contribute representative 
items.

Lady Roselyne Sarah L'Estrangere and I have been discussing the loaner 
garb.  We want get people together to do some repair work sometime in 
January.  We might supply pizza.

I've notice that the barony is having a population explosion.  
Fortunately, it isn't a recruiting issue.

Treasurer Lady Rowan Kalkin:  The barony has $2348.  $1841 is available 
funds.

The next council meeting is the last chance for guilds to turn in 
receipts against their 1993 $50 allotment.

Jongleurs Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  Practices are Monday 
evenings in MIT room 4-402.  Instrumentalists meet at 7pm.  Vocalists 
meet at 8:30pm.  On December 20, the vocalists will be caroling in 
Harvard Square.  The vocalists need tenors, basses, altos, and more 
sopranos wouldn't hurt.

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  The Academy of the Rapier has been meeting to 
study period fencing manuals.  We have finished the first pass on one 
period manual.  The next meeting will be Thursday, December 16 at 7pm at 
the home of the Baron.  It would be a good time for new people to join.  
We will be discussing what to do with the information we have learned.  
In January, we will start running through the manual a second time, 
carefully writing down our observations and conclusions.

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Autocrats table had a small but productive 
meeting.  Since it seems to only be the same people coming, I won't be 
scheduling a meeting for awhile unless a new person asks me to.


NEW BUSINESS

Lord Tibor of Rock Valley:  Do we still have send the annual letter to 
the Kingdom Seneschal about wanting to keep our seneschal?  [Since the 
answer was yes, Tibor volunteered to take care of the letter.]

Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  Marian of Edwinstowe and I want to 
run a Ladies' Champion Tournament in late May or early June.  We will be 
contacting our neighbors to make sure we don't conflict with any of their 
traditional events.  It will be a day event only.  The purpose of the 
Ladies' Champion Tournament is to ``give the ladies a reason to watch the 
fighting'' so there won't be very many other things going on at the 
event.  We will be talking to the Baroness about using the new judging 
system that will focus on the day's fighting rather than today's popular 
person.  We are looking at sites along the Charles or maybe the MIT Great 
Court. This might be a free event.


SCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Caitlin Davies:  The site book is still missing and nobody seems to know 
what happened to it.  In January, I will be looking for volunteers to 
make cold calls to sites to recreate the information.

Yelizaveta Medvedeva:  Middle Eastern drumming and dance practice will be 
held on Thursday, December 9 and 16, but not on December 23 and 30.  It 
will resume on Thursday, January 6.  Drumming is at 6:30, dance is at 
7:30 in MIT room 16-310.

We are probably sending in a group instrument order to Mid-East 
Manufacturing.  Talk to me if you are interested.

Harald Longfellow:  Wood workers meetings will now be on the first Sunday 
of the month.  For the rest of the winter, they will be held at the 
Buttery.  The next meeting will be on January 2 from noon-5pm.

Justin du Coeur:  About a year from now, I want to do a late period 
Elizabethan ball set at the Inns of Court.  If you are interested in 
helping with the research, talk to me.

Alexander the Storyteller:  Karen Traite will be moving back to the area. 
 She is looking for a job as a legal assistant.

Thome de Laurent:  I just wanted to say that Alexander of Kiev and 
Torogene Kazakh had my permission to take over the Pike Company.  Thank 
you to everyone who helped me when I ran the company.


OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  The Buttery is holding its traditional 
New Years' Party starting after noon on December 31 and running until the 
food runs out.  It's pot luck so bring something with you.  Feel free to 
bring a bedroll and stay over rather than dealing with the people on the 
roads who have had a little too much to drink.

Harald Longfellow:  I am hosting a Generic Holiday Party on December 17 
starting at 7pm.  Dinner will be at 8.  It's a pot luck.  There will be a 
yankee gift swap after dinner.  Talk to me if you don't know what one is. 
 You are welcome to arrive after dinner.  People can stay over if they've 
had too much alcohol to drive.

I am running a vintage dance on Sunday.  It's Ragtime Tango.  SCA members 
get in half price if they ask.  It's from 2-5pm in Porter Square.

On January 30 at 2:30pm, there will be a harpsichord concert at the 
Newton Free Library.  It is free.

Radegund von Feuchtenstadt:  I am looking for people interested in 
sharing a hotel room for Arisia.

Frydherik Eysenkopf:  I am looking for work.  I do multimedia and GUIs.  
I am looking for full time, part time, or consulting work.

Jehanneton d'Abbeville:  Now that I have a spinning wheel, I am looking 
for cards.  Nobody talk to me about looking for sheep.

Torogene Kazakh:  I am running the con suite at Arisia and could use 
volunteers to help.
