I was thinking of allowing a 1 line "comments" and a 1 line "affiliations"
area.

Alternatively, I can save a "segmented string" (unstructured BLOB of data) in
the db associated with a record that could be any amount of text saved between
a "BEGIN-COMMENT" "END-COMMENT" region.
