A minor retraction on my part.  Although I still think that in abstract and
absolute terms it is better to permit people the choice of allowing their name
to be sold in a mailing list, I now believe the negative political aspects of
having such a choice would hamper what you are trying to do.

In other words, I believe it is right to give in to irrationality in this case
(sigh).
