Here's a follow-up note to my original request for help on an E.K.
Domesday Boke.  I've tried to include answers to some of the more
frequently asked questions....

********* "AWWW, the Board wouldn't do that, would it?"  

This isn't about what the Board does (or doesn't).  The Board
theoretically might do this, the fact that it has the power to makes
me antsy.  But that's hardly the only circumstance under which we'd be
cut off!!  Heaven's sake, a couple of years ago they had to throw all
the corporate records into a car and drive them out of the path of a
raging wild fire bearing down on that neighborhood!  What happens if
the SCA goes bankrupt?  What happens if there's a political coup and
we get an even less reasonable Board?  What happens if we secede from
the Society?  What happens if the SCA, Inc. is taken over by the
mundane authorities, and *they* don't care about our local newletters
(after all, _TI_ is the official voice of the SCA)?  What happens if
someone spills a cup of coffee in the fileserver?  (I'm praying that
they're making back-ups, but....)

The list of things that could happen to make that amassed data pass
from our access for good are near to endless.  What's scary is how
possible some of them are now: bankruptcy, secession, litigation,
political coup, etc.

********* The Crown....

...said "GO FOR IT", or so I've heard.  I have been sending my plans
along to TRM, but they did not contact me directly (as is perhaps
wise!), but passed word through Don Danulf Donaldson.

********* Waddaya mean we gotta call everyone in our local domesday....

The reason of principles: We're not stealing data, folks.  People have
to agree to be in the Boke.  And if we merely steal data from an
official SCA document, the SCA has the right to demand it back.

The reason of practicalities: Besides, not all the data we need is in
the local domesdays.  We're going to conduct a short poll (paid or not?
going or staying?) and we need to collect some release permissions
(like "Can we put this in a phone book?").  Additionally, at least
some of the domesdays are half a year out of date (like the one where
I'm from) and their data's decayed.  

********** What's going to happen to the Boke?

Not bloody much, if all goes right in the universe.  Seeing this is a
mortal realm, and not Paradise, I have made other provisions.  I've
written a policy about who gets the book and who can use the
information in it (two different things; I mean to "escrow" the
information I release to some parties through a bonded mail house).
Basically, it comes down to: 

(1) The Boke itself will only ever be accessed by me and my deputies,
unless I decide to permit the Crown of the East such access.

(2) I might allow use of the contact info in the Boke (through
"escrowing") by organizations and people who fit certain criteria, and
then only for uses which fit certain critieria.  Those criteria
include "no commerical soliciting", "no soliciting for donations" but
do NOT include the criteria "must be the SCA, Inc."    Thus if the
East incorporates seperately, or a group spins off, I can, at my
discretion, permit them to contact the people in the Boke en mass.

I am also asking people if they mind their information being published
in an EK phone book.  Should I decide to take up that project, people
who said "yes" will be listed and only them.  Same thing for an
Internet finger service (seeing the db will be on the internet
*anyway*).  Please note two things.  First, the default for both
questions is "no, don't publish this information".  Second, the
requests are set up so that you can have your SCA information, and
*only* that information, appear any directory services I decide to
provide.  This would allow you to be listed as a participant in the
Society in a certain group or region, but keep your address and phone
number confidential.
