Subject: Chronique #8

Unto the noble and gracious readers of our journal Chronique does Brion
Thornbird ap Rhys,
Earl and Knight, send greetings and wishes of good health!

Chronique #8 is now complete and will be shipped out this week. For those of
you who were
kind enough to answer some of the questions, you will receive a complimentary
copy in less
than two weeks.

I received an overwhelming (67pp, single spaced 10 point type) response to
the questions--and
expanded the usual 12-18pp of answers to nearly 30. The table of contents
for the rest of the
issue is as follows:
Questions on William the Marshal / Nobility
Calendar--Pas d'armes and Period Tournament Formats
A Challenge from Baron Tristan of Pheonix Hall

CONSTRUCTION OF THE KNIGHTLY SHIELD, Theodore F. Monnich
Curator of the South Carolina State Museum, Mr. Monnich has done a really
fine job
of surveying the techniques of construction for these shields. Halftone
photographs are
included, as are exploded drawings of construction layers and strapping.

A KNIGHTLY HERMIT INSTRUCTS A SQUIRE IN THE WAYS OF CHIVALRY
Excerpts from The Book of the Order of Chivalry by Ramon Lull
A modern English translation introducing the work and giving passages of
interest
for those who would be squires and grow into knighthood by that road. The
full
translated text is also available in monograph form.

THE COMPANY OF SAINT MICHAEL, Hugh T. Knight
A tournament society that dovetails within the SCA, the article introduces
the company,
it's goals, techniques, and beliefs. There are now five or six such
companies--the
Company of Saint George --West/ Caid(Chronique #3); the Company of the
Star--
Trimaris (Chronique #10, forthcoming), and the Company of Saint
Mark--Atlantia??
(Chronique #10, forthcoming). The movement towards specialization within
the
SCA is something that Chronique aims to keep a particlar eye on as it
develops and
adds to the spice of the SCA experience.

WHAT IS A SQUIRE? Joseph Latta
Commentary on what it means to be a squire in modern tournament
re-enactments

SOME NOTES ON SQUIRES IN HISTORY, Brian R. Price
References on the derivations of the word "squire" and it's roots, sources
for further
information, and what duties were expected of squires.

EXCERPTS FROM BRION THORNBIRD'S BOOK OF THE TOURNAMENT
Two essays from the forthcoming book--The Office of Squire and The Accolade
of
	Knighthood

ORDINARY KNIGHTS AND SQUIRES: ENRICHING OUR CHIVALRIC RE-
	CREATION. David S. Hoornstra
An article examining problems caused by the current terminology of the words
'fighter' and observations on how we might address the problem. Part I of
II.

READING LISTS FOR SQURIES: Three complete lists of books for squires
	REVIEWS: The Chaucerian Handbook
	Classified Advertisements

Chronique is continuing to grow at a breakneck pace and the interest in
period sources for the
chivalric ideals, combat standards, arms and armour, and tournament formats
is continuing to
increase. Chronique hopes to chronicle these advances, and encourage them by
infusing new
sources, observations, and recounting the successes and trials of those who
strive to add
authenticity and chivalric demeanor to our tournament experience.
