Minutes of the Carolingian Great Council Meeting, 2 August 1993

Meeting called to order at 7:13pm.

Baron and Baroness (Sir Patri du Chat Gris and The Honorable Barbara 
Viggiani Milanese):  Hi.

Deputy Seneschal (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  I attended Curia.  
Issues that are of general interest are:  
- - Duchess Sedalia MacNare has become Seneschal of the SCA, one of the newly 
created positions.  As a result, Master Lawrence Thornguard is the new East 
Kingdom Seneschal.
- - The treasury of the East is depleted as a result of Drachenwald becoming 
a kingdom.
- - The new East Kingdom treasurer had some ideas about changing some 
procedures, I and a number of other people have talked to him.
- - I am giving a draft of proposed new society-wide rules for target archery 
to Peter the Red.

Arts and Sciences (Master Anton of Winteroak):  On August 11 around 9 pm 
look up, especially if you are in the eastern part of the time zone.  [The 
height of the Perseid meteor shower.]

Golden Gryphon (Lord Tibor of Rock Valley):  
- - Heraldic processing has changed.  The Kingdom has been broken up into 
regions for processing submissions.
- - Brigantia is re-rostering/warranting all heralds.  All heralds should 
have received a postcard asking for a response.  If you did not receive one 
and want to be a rostered herald talk to me or Brigantia.
- - I will be making a big push to train commenters in September.  A number 
of people have left the area just when more regional commenters are need.

Knight Marshall (Earl Sir Sebastian Nightwind):  There were no fighting 
events last month.  Fighter practice is up.  Buck the trend, come even 
after Pennsic.

Chronicler (Mistress Elayne Courtenay):  I will take articles tonight or by 
email by Wednesday for the arts and sciences issue.

Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  I am resigning as Deputy Chronicler as soon 
as possible.  If you are interested, talk to Elayne since you will be 
working with her.  I haven't heard about Pikestaff yet.  I'm resigning for 
other reasons.

Mistress of Lists (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  I am looking for a 
replacement.  Talk to me if you are interested.

Mistress of Fencing Lists (Guendalina Francesca di Antonio Cristiano):  Hi.

Historian-Librarian (Lady Caitlin Davies):  Hi.

Secretary (Lady Avelina Perceval):  Hi.

Magister (Lord Stefan Skywatcher): 
- - I am putting together fliers for the fall recruitment rush.
- - I am planning on attending the Knowne World Chatelaine's meeting at 
Pennsic.
- - There will be a Chatelaine's point at Pennsic from Monday to Saturday of 
war week.  It will be similar to the Gold Key table I have been running at 
events, but the people there might have different points of view on things.

Hot line (Lord Taran of Windy Hill):  This is the time of year when I get 
lots of calls to find out when Pennsic is.  I have copies of the Pennsic 
Booklet and can give out that information.  Call only between 10am and 10 
pm.  We have been getting calls from outside the area code.  Recently I 
received a call from the Seattle area.
Susan MacGregor:  Opening ceremonies for Pennsic are Tuesday [August 17] 
this year.

Dance (Master Justin du Coeur):  Dance practice continues this month.

Marshal of Fence (Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr):  
- - The new rules are now in effect.  Talk to me if you have questions about 
them.
- - The new King's Champion of Fence is Lord Danulf Donaldson and the new 
Queen's Champion of Fence is Seosamh MacDonald an Cruca O'Maille.

Jongleurs (Lady Tibicen Blackmane):  We will not be at dance practice this 
week because people are preparing for Pennsic.  Next week [August 9], Lady 
Gwendolyn of Middlemarch will be running both halves of practice.  There 
will be no Jongleurs' practice war week [August 16].  The Jongleurs are 
meeting in room 16-310.

Company of Bowmen(Lady Arlyana van Wyck):  
- - We have a 150 yard field near our house to use for practice.  It is a 
haying field and they hay twice a year.  We can use it from when they mow 
until the grass gets too tall.  This Sunday [August 8] is the last practice 
before Pennsic.  There will also be a practice this Thursday evening.  Call 
ahead.  There will be not practice the next two weeks [August 15 & 22] 
because of Pennsic.
- - At the King and Queen's Archery Championship Carolingians did very well.  
Meister Frydherik Eysenkopf finished third, Lord Colin Ursell finished 
fourth, and Lady Ygraine of Kellswood finished fifth.  His highness 
selected Ygraine as his champion.
- - We will have Carolingian loaner equipment available at Pennsic.  Try to 
contact us ahead of time so we can reserve something for you.  We will be 
in the Rock Valley encampment and should arrive of Sunday, August 15.

Calligrapher's Guild(Master Anton of Winteroak):  There will be no August 
meeting.  The September meeting will probably be the second Wednesday at 
the Baron and Baroness's home.

Baron's Troupe of Mummers(Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  
- - If anyone is not going to Pennsic and is interested in doing a short play 
based on the Arabian Nights to do at the Middle Eastern Miscellany event 
contact Lady Catrin o'r Rhyd For before August 13.
- - I am looking for 3 men and 9 women to do a mumming at University.  It is 
an original work by Lord Franz Joder von Joderhuebel.
Master Justin du Coeur:  I held a reading of "The Knight of the Burning 
Pestle".  Play readings are a nice idea.  Other people should think about 
hosting one.  I am planning a production of "The Knight of the Burning 
Pestle".  Auditions will be in late September.  Alexander the Storyteller 
will be directing.  I am the producer.  I am looking for an event in April 
or May to perform at.

Needleworker's Guild(Lady Caitlin Davies):  There will be no August 
meeting.

Rapier Company (Lord Danulf Donaldson):
- - We need a new company clerk.
- - Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr is running practices.
- - Loaner equipment will be available an Pennsic.
- - There will be no practice during Pennsic.
- - In September practices will be back at the Academy of Fence.
 
Storytellers (Lord Aleksandr Yevsha):  The next meeting will be the August 
15 at the Enchanted Ground at Pennsic.  The September meeting will be on 
the 15th at my home.

Fools Guild (Christian von Jauregk):  We held a meeting last month and did 
some long range planning.  We will be playing it by ear at Pennsic.  One 
thing to look forward to is our attempt to become gate guards.

Mitgaard (Tibicen Blackmane):  The MIT activities midway is August 31, 
before the next Council meeting.

Order of the Daystar (Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook):  Hi.

Order of the Perseus (Lord Danulf Donaldson):  Hi.

House Chat Gris (Sir Patri du Chat Gris):  Hi.

House Windsmeet (Lady Susan MacGregor):  Hi.

House Silverwing (Baron Steffan ap Cennydd of Silverwing):  Hi.

Autocrats of Events:

Middle Eastern Miscellany (Lady Siubhan nic Cruimein):  So far I have 7 
reservations.  The event is on September 11 from 2pm until 10 or 11pm.  The 
event is at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Waltham.  There is 
parking and it is two block from commuter rail and the #70 bus.  I need 
volunteers for set up and clean up.  Also, I still need teachers, people to 
write articles, and perform in the evening.  The fee is $10 for all day, $5 
for the classes only.

Carolingian University (Lady Elayne Courtenay):  As soon as Pennsic is over 
we will swing into full gear.  I will probably hold a meeting for the event 
staff right after the September Council meeting.

Japanese Event (Fujimoto Saburo):  The event will be at the Duello site in 
Brookline.  The date is November 13 and it will start around 1pm.  Anyone 
there before that will be put to work.  I need help with set up, clean up, 
gate, and kitchen.  The cost is $6 off-board, $13 on-board.  It will be a 
Japanese feast.  The price goes up $1 after October 31.

Academy of the Rapier (Lady Emilia Mazzo de Novella):  Sorry it's late.  I 
like turning in my report at a meeting.  The event lost $87.51.

Shakespeare Oxford Society Demo(Master Anton of Winteroak):  I have 
postponed planning until after Pennsic.

Seneschal (Master Kobayashi Yutaka):  The Ashgar paperwork is in.  Lord Li 
Kung Lo sent his letter in.  I mentioned it in my second quarter report.  
The Seneschal of Quintavia sent it a letter.  As far as can be determined, 
nobody is objecting, but the idea can still be stopped at Kingdom or the 
B.O.D.  It is actually the B.O.D. that transfers the zip codes.  Sharon is 
now being included in Aschgar because it was unclaimed and is contiguous.  
There are currently no paid members living there.

Treasurer (Lady Rowan Kalkin):  We have $3905 in uncommitted funds of which 
$1061 are available.

Baron Sir Patri du Chat Gris and the Honorable Barbara Viggiani Milanese 
convene court.  Lady Gwyneth ferch Meredydd Ynys Mon was called into court 
and, in a presentation made on behalf of their Majesties, named a companion 
of the Golden Rapier.


SCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Siubhan nic Cruimein:  I need volunteers and money [for my event].

Dante de Felice:  I meant to have a new Liber printout here, but we had a 
computer crash.  I have last month's printout.  If you haven't seen it, 
please check it to make sure your information is correct.  I will have a 
draft at the September Council meeting.  I hope to finalize the information 
the week after that meeting and have the Liber out in early October.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  On August 16 at Pennsic I will be hosting my 
annual St. Yoder's Day and Order of Us party.

Justin du Coeur:  A Northern Region Principality polling will probably go 
out in November to all paid members in the Northern and Central regions.  
If that doesn't fly, they will probably poll a smaller area.

Caitlin Davies:  I am not the Liber editor.  Changes given to me may or may 
not get to Dante.

Taran of Windy Hill:  Ditto.


Tibicen Blackmane:  I am looking for the contact person for the Knowne 
World Chorus.

Bertram of Bearington:  Hi.  I'm visiting this area.  Alister McCrummim 
will be moving to this area from the Debatable Lands on the lend-lease 
program.  He can be contacted through me until he arrives.


OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Emilia Mazzo de Novella:  A friend has a room for rent in Nashua.  She is 
looking for a job as a corporate librarian or as a librarian in general.  
Contact me if you have information to pass to her.

Arlyana van Wyck:  Since Eowyn is moving, her apartment is available to 
rent.  It is a two bedroom.  Also, we have a 1 bedroom apartment in 
Somerville to let.  Both are available September 1.

Bryttan: 
- - Lucrece[Jackie Burke] has chemises for sale.  Her phone number is 
YOG-SOTH.
- - The truck I am renting for Pennsic is leaving this Friday.  You can rent 
space in it for $2.50 per cubic foot.

Tibor of Rock Valley:  
- - Gwenllian [Kathryn Bryant] is moving back to the area and looking for a 
roommate situation.

Franz Joder von Joderhuebel:  Software Leverage is looking for software 
people contact me if you are interested.

Sabine:  I am looking for a job again, something full-time in sewing or 
woodworking or that might get me into graduate school.

Susan MacGregor:  Pikestaff has information about lectures by Janet Arnold 
and I have more information about them.  The contact name is wrong in 
Pikestaff it should be Joy Emery, not Jay Emery.  I'll see that the 
information gets into the Miniscule.  August 21, Janet Arnold will be 
speaking at the Plymouth Plantation.  On September 30 and October 1 & 2 she 
will be in Rhode Island.  The lectures on September 30 and October 1 are at 
4 pm.  The lecture on October 2 is at 10 am and is free.  She will also be 
speaking at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts at 7:30pm on October 6.  The 
topic that night will be "Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe."  We can get $1 off 
the normal admission price if we have a group of 10 or more.  I will 
organize a group to go.

Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook:  Guillaume and I are moving.  We could use 
help moving on August 14 and 28.  [New address: 185 Summer Street, 
Arlington, MA  02174 after August 25].

Master Kobayashi Yutaka:  The next meeting will be September 6 [Labor Day], 
probably in 6-120.
