Mon Elements: Character

Japanese characters were widely used in mon, for denotative or symbolic meaning. This is the most flexible element, both in terms of the wide variety of characters available and the many different ways they were chosen: a character from the bearer’s name, a virtue they like, a character from the name of a god they follow, a reference to a legend about their family, or a pun.
