Danulf points out that we have a close relationship with BMDL.  Well, if 
that's true, I didn't know about it, and I've been a Carolingian for over 
7 years.  True, I'm not in the political circles, but the first time I'd 
ever heard of BMDL (Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands or some such 
thing) was when I started working on the Pikestaff at the beginning of 
January - and then I only heard of it because that's where the Pikestaff 
was last done.  Some of these "ties" we have may be fairly old and exist 
only for the fabled "old guard".

Also, re the Insular Carolingians comment - yes, I am an insular 
Carolingian. Why?  Because travel costs money, and I don't have any.  
Carolingia has roughly an event a month, which is about the limit of my 
SCA budget (until Ed McMahon shows up with the check), and I don't have 
to spend much money on gas to get to our events.  Plus, I don't relish 
the thought of sleeping on some stranger's floor (if the event is far 
enough away that I'd need crash space). Since Carolingia does tend to 
have about one event a month, I don't particularly need to travel to get 
my fill of events.  Residents of smaller groups who might only put on an 
event once every 3 or 4 months need to travel if they want to get to an 
event with any sense of frequency.

Don't worry, though.  Ed McMahon should be knocking on my door any day 
now with my $10 million check, and then I'll certainly travel more to 
events (and have much spiffier garb, and a pavillion, and...)
