Winter Frolic, or As You Like It

The Barony of Carolingia invites you to join us in a fabulous day of feasting,
fighting and fencing in recognition of the joys of our Current Middle Ages.
We'd enjoy welcoming you between the hours of 10 AM and 10 PM on February 5,
1994, (AS XXXIIX) at the Cambridge National Guard Armory, 450 Concord Avenue,
Cambridge MA 02138-1214.

We have the following additional activities planned: Fencing, a Ransom heavy
list tourney, a poetry contest, Baronial court, dancing, an auction to
benefit the Carolingian Rapier Company, and Archery. We will also have
dancing in the evening, both Western and Eastern style dance classes in the
afternoon, an heraldic submissions table, and period storytelling. Gentles
have asked if they may bring board games (of course you may) but no formal
tournament is planned. Don't forget we will also have a seminar on spinning
and other fiber arts. There will be many merchants. Fighters, be sure to bring
ransoms to last the day. Lady Morgaine ferch Cadwr is still accepting donations
for the auction (+1 617 647 9199).

We have a large, heated hall, with sufficient space for fighting and fencing
lists. There are showers in the men's restroom only. Bring games or projects or
musical instruments; there is plenty of room for all. The hall is surrounded by
bleachers: if you'd like us to arrange formal performance time, we can do so.
The autocrat is providing a big room and an opportunity -- tell us what you'd
like to do and what you need, and we'll make you happy. Merchants are welcome,
let us know in advance, and bring your own tables or blankets.

There will be a simple feast served for 100, cooked by Lord Dhughall MacAran.
There is virtually unlimited off-board space, and you may either use empty
tables, or spread a blanket and eat picnic style. Cambridge will not allow us
alcoholic beverages, sorry. The feast is sold out at this time.

Prices are $5 for off and out board, and $10 dollars on board, with no
children's prices. Infants and very young children are free. Make all checks
payable to "SCA Inc. -- Barony of Carolingia." Please make on-board
reservations early: 100 places for dinner are too few, but the facilities are
limited. Send reservations and questions to the autocrat: Lord Tibor of Rock
Valley (Mark Schuldenfrei, 84 Egerton Road, Arlington, MA 02174-8521. +1 617
648 5326). A SASE is always appreciated. Please use legal names with each
reservation. Please write early for assistance with motel or crash space.

Directions:
From Outside Boston: From the North: I-95 or I-93 to Route 128 south. From the
West: I-90 to 128 north. From the South: I-95 to 128 north. In any case, take
exit 29A to Route 2 East. Follow it about 6 miles, where the road shifts from
a highway to a local access road. Be in the right lane, and SLOW DOWN after the
merge. Follow the signs for Route 2 East, Route 3 South, Route 16 West (only
in Massachusetts could you take all three at once). Cross over the bridge, make
a left at the first rotary, and go straight at the second rotary onto Concord
Avenue (NOT RIGHT). If you pass Porter Chevrolet/Honda, you didn't go
straight. The Armory is on your right about one block down, park in the rear.

From Within Boston: The armory is in the NW corner of Cambridge. You can take
Concord Avenue from Harvard Square, and the armory will be on your left. If
you want to take Route 2, 16 or 3, from the north follow the directions above.
From the south, turn right just after Porter Chevrolet/Honda, and look for the
armory on the right. Again, park in the rear.

By Public Transportation: You can take the Red Line to Alewife MBTA. Exit out
the downtown side of the station (not the usual side). Take the ramp to the
sidewalk on the side away from the main station, and roughly follow the
directions for the cars: cross the bridge, pass the shopping, the Dunkin
Donuts, and take Concord Avenue. It's about a 15 minute walk. You can also
catch the Number 74 or 78 bus from Harvard Square, and get off the at the
intersection of Concord Avenue and Birch Street: about 7 minutes. These buses
run about every 1/2 hour, from 6 AM until 10 PM, and less often until midnight.
Call +1 617 722 3200 for information from the MBTA.
