Subject: URGENT: An E.K. Domesday - help needed!
Date: Sat, 05 Mar 94 17:22:53 EST

To all citizens of the East Kingdom who come by these words, does
Tibicen Blackmane offer this plea:

Help!

I am making a Domesday Boke for the East Kingdom. In these days of
great instability the need is urgent for this work to be done.

Currently the only source of contact information for citizens of the
East is through the Corporate Registry. Should anything happen that
caused the Corporation to cease publishing the mailing labels of
Pikestaff -- such as going into bankruptcy -- the Kingdom of the East
would be shattered into a hundred unconnected shards. Even the Crown
would have no direct way to contact its subjects.

In addition, should the "pay-to-play" policy be implemented, an
unknown number of participants could be banned from those gatherings
which are their primary source of SCA information. We will have no
way to contact them should the policy be altered or their help sought.

This must not happen. You can help. With enough hard work it should
be possible to gather the contact information for every consenting
citizen of the East Kingdom.

This not done in any office or agency of the Society or the Crown. As
such, this eliminates any claim that this Boke is really an official
part of the East Kingdom and SCA Incorporated, and protects it from
any ill fate that might befall either.

This project is being undertaken with full knowledge of our Crown.
While Their Majesties can take no official part, They see this effort
as a positive act.

The information we will be collecting will be of two parts: one is
simple Domesday information (modern and SCA contact information), the
other is a poll similar to what the EK Crown has already requested.
This will allow us to generate demographic information that can assist
our Crown in the short term.

All this information will be held in highest confidence. Under no
circumstances will it be used for commercial use. Access to the Boke
to it is restricted to myself and my deputies. Presently this
includes myself and Don Danulf Donaldson (who is developing the
database software).

But I am going to need all the help I can get. I need your help.

There is a need for people to take census in their local groups,
especially to beat the bushes for non-paid participants. People will
be needed to travel to events and take census there. Within each
group, we will need people to call everyone in their local Domesday
Books and get census forms filled out over the phone.

Once the census forms are submitted, they will need to be formed into
email and submitted to our central DB. This will require a lot of
help. Those helping will need access to reliable email (and
preferably emacs with a mail interface).

Additional help is needed:
	- Develop and typeset announcements and ad copy
	- an emacs macro hacker to develop a mail form
	- donations to help pay for an ad in Pikestaff

I need people who can make a serious commitment. This task must be
done *soon*, for the longer we wait, the more we court disaster.

                        HOW TO VOLUNTEER:

Send email to dagoura@mit.edu with "VOLUNTEER DOMESDAY" in the subject
line. Please include your names, your local group name, and how you
want to help; including your phone number if you are hard to reach by
email would be wonderful. You will receive an automated reply to
begin with.

Note: if you can hack emacs macros, please also contact Don Danulf
Donaldson directly at groff@epee.enet.dec.com

Feel free to pass this message (in its entirety) on to other
interested people, either electronically or in hardcopy. Please email
me with any questions, and I will try to get back to you as soon as
possible,

Thank you!
