Subject: the favor of ladies

To all who read these words, greetings from Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife
Brook, co-Autocrat of the upcoming Ladies' Champion Tourney.

Good gentles all,
As our Baroness, Her Ladyship Barbara Viggiani Milanese, was kind
enough to herself announce during her recent sitting of court, Marian of
Edwinstowe and I are attempting to revive the tradition of the Carolingian
Ladies' Champion -- with some few modifications as advised by experience.
One of the traditions which we have not attempted to meddle with is the
physical token the Champion is presented, the Carolingian Ladies' Favor.
That tradition holds that every Carolingian lady (female person -- as
opposed to Lady, armigerous female person) has the right to add her mark to
the favor. As those who were present at the Feast of St. George may have
chanced to see, there is ample space for all those who have not yet
contributed. There is also an embroidery kit pertaining to the favor,
which Sayyid Mustapha contributed when he held the office of Champion, so
that no lady who wishes to add her mark need be deterred by lack of
supplies. The present champion, Lord Alexander Cullinan (by some called
Tam), who has been living a somewhat retired life, has graciously allowed
me to borrow and take temporary charge of the favor, so that all
Carolingian ladies who wish, or at least as many as possible, may have the
chance to add their marks to it before the tourney takes place.
I have now completed the repair work upon it, and it is therefore now
available to any lady of Carolingia who wishes to add to it. I will have
it with me at Crown Tourney, Mayday, Council, and other occasions to be
announced in the future. If you would like to add to it, get in touch with
me so I can arrange to lend it to you. Please note that you do not have to
embroider directly onto the favor; if you prefer, you may construct some
other (cloth-compatible) mark and applique that to the favor. (As the
number of Carolingian ladies never ceases to grow, and the space available
is not unlimited, I take the liberty of suggesting that items for applique
not exceed a few inches in any dimension.)
There is one other matter to consider: the ladies who have already
worked on the favor. As far as I have been able to discover, any lists
which were written down in the past telling who made which mark have been
lost in the mists of antiquity, and the memories of all the former
champions I have been able to interview have also grown somewhat clouded,
leaving us with some several marks for which we have at best only guesses
for their authors. I enclose this list below; corrections are encouraged.
I beg you all also to pass this message along to those who do not have
ethereal access: to all Carolingian ladies, that the favor is ready to be
amended, and to those who may have already made their marks upon it, that
we seek a true and complete concordance of who and which, for the benefit
of history. So saying, I remain

Your servant & Carolingia's,
Eowyn

A list of marks on the Carolingian Ladies' Favor

This list starts at the Carolingian arms, runs down the length of the favor
to the end, and then back up the other side; the far end and the seams
between the blue and yellow parts are noted. Marks for which I was not
able to discover a maker, or for which the maker listed was only someone's
guess, have question marks around them. However, lack of that designation
does NOT absolutely determine that the maker listed is correct; some of our
guesses merely seemed more solid than others. Also, I welcome corrections
of the descriptions here given. Note that in some cases ladies have two
names listed, the ones I believe they held when they worked on the favor,
and the ones they later took. -Eowyn
