Well, my first SCA event is pertinent in a funny way.  All I knew of the
SCA before then was a brief description and a couple of pictures over a
kitchen table when someone was trying to take my sister's mind off of her
just deceased pet.  The person who invited us to the event had a number of
guests at that Valentine's Revel, so she smoothly slipped us over to a
knight who has been in an out of the Society since before Pennsic II.

I didn't know what a knight was, although he explained in general terms. 
He was gallant, charming and informative.  When the end of the evening
rolled around, and we were making "see you again sometime soon?" noises at
each other, I had a thought which should amuse many of you.  It went like
this - "My instincts say this one is something special.  Anyway, these
people knighted him; he must be an honorable guy on a date."  Well, being
a knight isn't a guarantee of dating etiquette necessarily, but my
instincts were right.  It's eleven years, one marriage and one child
later.

I guess I never had peer fear given how I was introduced to the SCA, but
being a tad of an introvert I have always been hesitant to approach people
whom I don't know well.  Interestingly, one of the really good pieces of
advice I was given at the vigil for my laurel was that people would take a
tendency towards introversion as being an inaacessible peer now that I was
becoming one.  So I try to be a bit more extroverted.  Although that
charming knight I met eleven years ago at the Revel is still the extrovert
of the family.  Since his knight's belt is linen and hard to see, most
people who've chatted with him never even know they've been talking to a
knight.
