When I read this in today's Tech Talk, I couldn't believe it, so I
called the office and asked.  I am posting this ad for them, details I
got over the phone follow:

MEDIEVAL TECHNOLOGY: THOUGHT AND PRACTICE

A research project to which any student interested in technology and
history could, with or without much experience in these areas, make a
fine contribution.  The aim of this project is to produce a book on
medieval technology: its use and contemporary and current
understanding of the theoretical implications of that use.  In the
study, I shall focus on the pragmatic aspects of the actual
construction and contextual use of specific medieval technologies in
the areas of agriculture, manufacturing, communication, and warfare.
I shall also explore the reasons for and the implications of their
incorporation in the Middle Ages, whether through innovation, adoption
or adaptation.  Much of the initial work would be bibliographic
searches.  Further tasks would depend greatly on the strengths and
interest of the student.  Language skills (Latin, Greek, Medieval
Hebrew, and/or Arabic) would be very useful, for there will be need of
text identification and translation.  Interest in the depiction,
graphic or artistic, and the actual workings of simple machines would
also be an asset.  Computer graphics experience could come in very
handy.  It is a project in which a student could have fun as well as

According to the woman I spoke with about the UROP (at the phone
number above), this will be funded through the UROP office.  Because
UROP is out of money, there would be no chance of pay until next
semester.  But, on the plus side, they may very well need quite a
number of students.  

Maybe Ms. Price wants to be a student group's faculty advisor? :}
