Subject: Assorted Peerage News

Well, it's taken me far too long to get around to this, but I've got a
long compile running, so it seems like a good time to write...

Most (but probably not all) folks are aware that Elayne Courtenay was
inducted into the Order of the Laurel two weeks ago, at Northern Lights.
The ceremonies were rather memorable, and worth recounting:

There we were, fairly early in the event. The Arts Pentathlon was in
the process of getting off the ground, when Their Majesties called a
short court. Some of us (the court junkies, mostly) sat down to listen,
as Master Anton was called into court. (At this point Elayne, who was
of course helping with the Pentathlon, began to notice the court, and
sat down.)

Anton announced that circumstances forced him to resign his Laurel.
There was much consternation at this, since the award was quite recent,
and well-merited. When His Majesty asked why this would be necessary,
Anton told him that it would be inappropriate for him to marry below
his station, and that his rank was less important than his lady. The
King suggested that an alternate path was available, and had Elayne
called into court. Sponsors were called for, and came forth (including
our own Sir Michael as sponsor for the Chivalry), extolling Elayne's
virtues. King Tsurunaga then sent Elayne off to vigil, to contemplate
the offers of both Peerage and marriage, and returned Anton's Laurel
medallion, deeming the matter dealt with.

After a pleasant afternoon's vigil (with a larder well-stocked by the
ladies of House Windsmeet), court was reconvened late in the day. After
a variety of other business, Elayne was once again called in, to finish
the ceremony. She accepted the accolade of the Laurelate, and was
presented with a lovely brass wreath of laurel, a cloak made to match
Anton's, and perhaps the most ornate promissory scroll in the history
of the Known World.

Having completed his business with her, His Majesty pointed out that
there was another consideration awaiting her answer. Anton then
proposed in open court, with a sonnet that he had written for Elayne,
and presented her with a written copy of said poem. She accepted,
and it was fortunate that this was the end of court, as there was
nary a dry eye in the house.

In other good news, I've learned from Daniel that Janelyn and Trahaearn
(Janelle and Peter), late of Fenmere and Duncharloch, have been
inducted into the Order of the Pelican out in An Tir for the many
labours that they have performed since arriving in Madrone. Those
who know them may want to write and congratulate them...

A hearty Vivant for our newest Peers!

Random Quote du Jour:

"As is usual in the past few years the archery points were decisive. The
level of skill is rising; at my first Pennsic it seemed that the safest
place to stand was in front of the targets..."
