Subject: Birka

While I think of it:

Time to be just a shade politically incorrect, and talk about something
that doesn't often get talked about in public: Carolingia's attitude
towards Birka. I know that much of the Barony has a real problem with
the event, due in large part to past screw-ups. (In particular, Birka I.)
I just want to say that, in my opinion, this year definitely made up
for past mistakes. It was a good event, in a good site, and reasonably
well-run. No, not everything ran on time, but nothing ran *wildly* late,
either. And the new site (a public high school) is much, much larger
than the old one -- while the event suffered from a bit of sprawl, it
did really have enough space for everything this year.

The biggest gripe in the past has been feasts. Here, I can say without
qualification that it was a Good Feast. The pacing was a little soft,
but not unreasonably so, and the food was both period and well-prepared.
I have only praise for the cooks this time -- they did a bang-up job.

All in all, it was an event I would have been perfectly happy to have
seen held here -- which from me is a pretty high complement. If you
didn't go this year because of past problems with it, you might
consider trying it again next year...
