I think many people ARE making an "attempt" at pre-1600 music when they =
do 18th -19th century ballads, or Witch of the West Mer Lands, in the =
same way many people make an "attempt" at pre-1600 clothing with their =
"bright green polyester Errol Flynn style Robin Hood" garb, or their =
"Tudor out of print fabric with a zipper up the back from a Simplicity =
pattern" garb.

The point is, these people are usually making an effort to do what they =
believe is period or appropriate. Is it period? No. Are they making =
their best effort based on their current knowledge and participation =
level? Oftentimes, yes, they are.

We are all at different points on the road to authenticity. Many will =
try to go the distance, some will succeed, while others will decide to =
stop at some mid-point. IMHO, that's fine. We are suppossed to be =
having fun. We each choose how far we want to go.

While the idea of an SCA where everyone is perfectly period in every =
detail of their performance, clothing, encampment, mannerisms, persona, =
etc., is very enticing (what an experience that would be!), it is never =
going to happen. We are on a continuum, each of us at a different spot. =

In reference to this entire ongoing thread/debate, I am reminded of an =
old George Carlin routine, where he points out that when driving on a =
freeway, everyone who drives slower than you is a moron, while everyone =
who drives faster than you is a maniac. I think that the SCA is best =
served if we can manage NOT to apply this same standard to out endeavors =
within the Society.
