There is, of course, a big question when it comes to playing on modern vs. period instruments. I, personally, play the Recorder. Most of mine are the ABS Resin variety, which have a better sound than all but the most pricey recorders. My only wooden instrument is a Bass, that actually does not sound as good as the Resin instrument that I replaced it with. But, it looks good to play a wooden instrument every so often.
What is really important is that music is actually being performed. Most of the time, this question does seem to settle on the use of modern Guitars. Not many people have either the money or the time to spend on a Lute, for instance.
It is important that we always welcome anybody interested in performing, no matter what they are using. Our responsibility is to welcome all.
