Ho" To: Kate Mahoney Subject: hydra character hey, so, i talked to frank last night and he gave me some suggestions and stuff too. so i was thinking of stats somewhere along this line: psyche 22 (i can't go above the highest bid, right? this puts me at 1.5?) str chaos level (this may or may not be an okay idea) end 7 warfare 40 pattern 50 if i keep a diary and maintain a web page, i think that leaves me with 4 pts. frank said that allies were good, so a family friend would be good. sadly, not enough pts for devotees. i guess that would be a friend in amber, but if you let me be brand and deirdre's kid (which would be way cool :) i guess i might have a friend in chaos...? which would be good if everyone else in the run is in the court of chaos, but i guess that's not up to me. and i was also thinking of getting a pet. frank suggested not spending points to get a spiffy weapon or armor since i could get that sort of thing in shadow without to much trouble. would you agree with that? anyway, i was thinking of having a cat-type pet. a blue snow-leopard (like quux) but one that can shape shift between being house cat sized and big and nasty. you know, something that can both scout around and be very intimidating... i don't really know if i have enough points for that. probably zero stuff. what do think? history-wise, i'm not sure what you think brand and deirdre have been doing since the patternfall war? does everyone know they're still alive? Both high warfare and high psyche is cool. None of the chaos people could afford that, since they all sunk 35 points into shapeshift. :) Amber rank stength is actually pobably more relevant for the shapeshifters than you. (It's a minimum for being able to fly. :) 4 points could get you an Amber devotee if you want it. (I've swamped the amber/chaos devotee costs...) Or you could spend it on the pet. 1 point will give you the alternate form, which could be big and ferocious looking, or, say invisible. As for the other three, here are some possibilities: 2 danger sense 1 or 2 points of increased fighting skill, invulnerability, extra damage, speaking ability (includes intelligence), shadow manipulation 2 follow people though shadow 2 rapid healing My character in mikee's run bought a 5 point pet that had 2 named and numbered forms, including something reptilian, something winged, a dagger, and invisible version of all of these 2 danger sense 1 able to speak I found it pretty useful, but there are certainly other cool things you can get. With my last round of eeps, I expanded my chaos creature to have 2 N&N forms 2 able to speak and sing (ie smarter) 2 psyche neutral (ie invisble to mental sense) 4 extraordinary pyshce (danger sense + can communicate with ea. other across shadow...) x2 a dozen of them. They're my spy/reconaissance/coummication satellite network. :) Anyway, just some thoughts on those last four points. Frank is right though about spiffy weapons. Zero stuff isn't bad. (My first character had zero stuff.) In case you're curious, run average is 2-3 points of bad stuff. (It's a very bad stuff sort of run... esp with people not knowing they're phenomenally powerful. ;) Certainly with Brand and Deirdre as parents, you'd be justified in taking bad stuff. About your background: I think you were raised in a high tech monarchy with Brand and Deirdre as sort of King and Queen and you as heir presumptive. Let's call the shadow Talgarth. You grew up as the golden child who could have anything she wished, living in great palaces in the sky and the countryside. Since Amberites live for a long time, there was never an sense of urgency about readying yourself to rule someday. Heck, in some ways you have the best deal of all with your parents ruling: you get all the perks and none of the work. As a you child, both Brand and Deirdre were around great deal and paid a lot of attention to you. (Though it was often one or the other, not both.) When you were about 16, your parents began their plans to make Talgarth supercede and ultimately replace Amber in the universe. Then you truly would have the universe for the asking... Brand began teaching you about the Pattern, taking you to the Primal Pattern to walk it in secret. Shadowwalking -- and hellriding -- was a tremendous rush. [Perhap you developed an appetite for that sort of power. ?] Brand also makes you a deck of trump. Deirdre taught you about your relatives and how to fight. She gives you a fine horse, suit of armor, & sword. Both made frequent trips to Amber and other places (Brand to Chaos, for instance). It began to look as though things were going to proceed as planned: Oberon had been lured away and imprisoned, plans had put in motion to obliterate the pattern. Then Eric's cabal (Eric, Julian, Caine) siezed power, and Deirdre allowed herself to be captured in order to watch that group. Brand, Fiona and Bleys attempted to obilerate the Pattern by murdering Martin at its center. It was never clear what happened here -- one of Bleys and Fiona was sabatoging this from within, either because they suspected Brand's duplicity or Chaos's. Suffice to say that the Pattern was not destroyed and Martin escaped and the alliance between Bleys, Fiona and Brand split up, isolating Brand. It is at about this time that Brand learns of Corwin's whereabouts (from Eric via Deirdre) and tries to kill him because he has hand a vision in Tir-na Nog'th that Corwin will be his undoing. Corwin returns and Deirdre links up with him, ending up in Remba, from where she contacts you periodically by trump, but does not visit. Brand has been imprisoned by Fiona. Several years pass in Amber -- perhaps six months for you. You are about 20 now. Corwin escapes, returns with an army and saves Amber from the forces of Chaos, though doesn't actually crown himself king. Brand is rescued, stabbed, and recovers enough to briefly sieze the jewel of judgement. Deirdre attaches herself to Corwin's camp, spying for Brand. Corwin has marshalled the others and attempts to both stop Brand and Chaos, thought the real trouble for your parents comes when Oberon returns. The last time you saw you father, he has regained the Jewel from Corwin and was on the verge of realizing his dream. Then there was nothing for nearly a month. You couldn't raise either Brand or Deirdre on trump. Finally, a trusted friend of Deirdre's came to Talgarth to tell you they were both dead. Killed by Caine, with Fiona's and perhaps Random's help. Oberon was also dead and Random was King in a restored Amber now. Talgarth was yours now... How does that sound? Fiona and Bleys both returned to Amber for a little while, and then left again -- separately, but at about the same time. They're currently off in shadow somewhere. Benedict did not return directly to Amber, but when he did come back, it was to formally acknowledge his son Alexander. (Bringing the total acknowledged grandchildren of Oberon to three.) The technical limit is 20 points. The rules suggest the following: diary (got that), draw trumps (I do that in Mikee's run), keep a log (probably not relevant here), write stories/write poetry (not too interested in that...) I dunno. Propose something. I think about whether there's anything I want done. :) The points look fine. Write a diary entry whenever it seems appropriate. I'll pester you if I think you're behind. You don't need to pay any points for Talgarth. (Though you can, either now, or with eeps.) Talgarth probably isn't too easy to get to if you don't know how to get there. Brand never took you to Chaos. You can good shadowwalking out to the Black road. It's surprisingly easy to fine. All manner of strange creatures travel it. (You can't actually travel it yourself -- it makes you sick to stay on it very long.) You run afoul of one of these creatures at one point. A great horned thing, with fangs and claws. You're very evenly matched overall. It is noticeably stronger than you, but you're a better fighter. It tries some magic on you, but can't get the spell past your mental defenses. You're both armored. Him (it?) naturally so and you with the armor Deirdre gave you (bright silver). Your sword is very sharp though, and penetrates his armor better than this claws do yours. The fight is very long, but after nearly an hour. He is dead and you are badly wounded. You stumble off aways from the black road and collapse. You wake to find a young girl (she's maybe 17) asking if you're all right. She's dressed in blue and white brocaded silks. (Sort of a long tunic over pants.) She has dark hair and eyes looks slightly Asian. She asks if the creatures from the Black Raod attacked you... --- Yes you have two copies of Brand and Deirdre's trumps. The backs are different. The set Deirdre gave you are unicorn backed. Brand's aren't. You don't get anyone on trump. Going through their things, you don't immediately find anything too unsual. They had a lot of nice stuff -- not all of which you've sen before -- but no secret weapons that you can see. :) Their rooms always have a very different feel. You can go shadowwalking to Brand's horse. Sure. It _could_ have been left her by him before he died. The shadow seems mostly empty of people and pleasant and grassy with lots of open space. Something a horse might like. You don't have the impression that a person could learn much rom mindreaming the horse -- it's not really smart enough to give any useful information. It did not run through Talgarth. 2. Back in Talgarth You can feel free to name Brand's horse. It has a name that Elena knows, but I'm terrible at naming things, especially horses. The horse makes it back fine and seems to be capabel of putting up with a lot of abuse. Talgarth can, in fact, pretty much run itself for long periods of time. The Golden Circle nations are nearby shadow countries that have trading agreements with Amber in exchange for things such as allowing Amber's troops passage & possibly paying some small token tribute or something. The only one named in the books is a place called Begma. (The _Shadow Knight_ book mentions the Golden Circle, if you have that.) Basically what I'm looking for are little description sort of like the country entires in the Encyclodpedia Tzalmirica. Make up some names, important cities, a little about the culture, names of important figures, perhaps if there are well known legends or if a country figured prominently in an old battle, you could says something about that... He also flirts shamelessly with the lady across from him, who seems to enjoy it. Fiona directs a lot of effort at engaging Cedric in conversation, but he remains fairly reticent. Flora seems to alternate between trying to get Cedric to talk and muscling in on Caine's conversations. You can't really follow what's going on further down the table to well. Martin will make at least a polite attempt to talk to you, but if you don't respond, he'll rapidly shift to listening to Random and Corwin talk. Alexander isn't as taciturn as, say, Cedric, nor half as sullen, but when it comes right down to it, he doesn't have a lot to say. You'd guess he's probably more interested in talking to you than to the woman flirting with Caine on his other side. At least once he's dressed in a black leather motorcycle jacket, jeans, and mid calf black boots and heading for the stables or jsut coming back from there. Corwin will suggest that Gerard or Caine (though his tone suggests you go to Gerard) are the ones to talk to to if you wan to really get a feel for the navy. If you just want to go look at the sea, there are the beaches (near the seacaves, which he reccommends you don't try to tackle now) or the docks or the faiella-boinin (the stairs to Rebma). [beaches/navy] The proper beaches aren't really in easy sight of the docks, but there is a sandy shore you can walk along there. Generally, (in as much as you can tell in a couple days) there seem to be a couple of ships in dock, and the rest are out to sea (where at sea isn't necessarily clear). Merchant ships come and go every day, often in groups of two or three. You've seen one navy ship come in and one go out while you've been watching.
