Yeah, Kate, I may have to bow out.

I just don't have the time to add another run at the rate you want to
move things along at. It's a shame, too, because Suri could be even
more fun, but if you think I'm seriously affecting other people's
enjoyment by running at the rate I can manage to send email at, then
giving up may be my best option after all.

What do you think?

It would be sad to lose you, since you're so much fun and I've got some
cool plots built around you... but if you don't think you can manage to
send about one message a week, it will be impossible to keep things
going if you ever end up 1) in the same shadow as another PC or 2) in a
conversation/conflict with another PC.

Currently, you're in a slow time shadow. The longer you putter around,
the slower it will turn out to have been. :)

Let me know what you decide,

Susie had mentioned that you were thinking of doing that. How
unfortunate. (Werewolves and vampires, blech.)

Um, I might be convinced, though I'm not thrilled at the idea of having
to learn a whole new system, sigh.

Darn, losing you in hydra is going to be unfortunate. I really liked
that character. Would you mind if I tried to get someone else to play
her then?

How sad. Two pieces of bad news in one day.

And it's raining on top of all that.

Thanks, Kate!

But in other news, I think I really ought to drop out of Hydra.
I just can't seem to manage to keep up with the email if I'm going
to be on a time-line, and there are enough other demands on my time
that I really ought to just stop.

One of those demands is my own run, which I really want to spend more
time on. As a matter of fact, (and this is a long story, but I'll
condense it for you) I want to make some potentially serious changes to
the world and offer
everyone a chance to make new and different characters (or keep the ones
they have already).

This is because the system will be changing from Amber to WhiteWolf's
Storytelling system (you'll be sorry to hear that dice are involved). I
always thought of Corimath as a preface to the story I really want to
tell, and now I can tell it the way I want to.

Anyway, the setting will be modern, and players can build Mage, Werewolf,
Faerie, Gypsy (and possibly other) characters, or try to convert existing

characters, if they want.

If you might be interested, please lemme know, and we'll sit downa and
talk about it some time.

Again, sorry to be bagging out of Hydra, but I think it'll be better this
way in the long run, and I won't be holding people up anymore.

Okay, I'll see if I can't turn up someone to play her (though I don't
have many candidates right now.)

If your situation changes in a few months and Suri hasn't been picked
up, you can certainly pick her back up. (Good odds she won't have done
much if no one has picked her up.)

If Suri has been picked up, well, you can probably have back in if you
manage to convince me that you'll actually send email this time. :)
I'll probably back her up (since none of the other PCs have noticed
anything else you've done yet) and rerun her a bit with whoever picks
her up... so that won't be too much of a problem.

How's that sound?

No, be my guest and have someone else run her if you like.

I hope if my situation changes in a few months and I want in again that I

Would this be possible?

Hmm, well inspecting my secret notes, I find there are nearly a half
dozen pointless grandchildren of Oberon (and a couple tentatively
pointed ones you could pick up), but the ones I was thinking about last

Thnis sounds fine to me, actually. I was thinking of something of a
Pattern and Sorcery, Warfare and Psyche type of a person. As long as
one of them could potentially fit those criteria, it wouldn't matter
too much whether he or she was a good guy or a bad guy or what.

Howzabout that?

Okay, Patten, Sorcery, Warfare & Psyche could be cool. Pick a name,
point yourself up, and give me a quick personality sketch. Assume
you've been living in either Amber or the Golden Circle and aren't known
to the rest of you family (besides Caine).

Kate,

Hey I've even picked out a picture for myself for the Rogues' gallery.
Just got to get a good scan of it.

Real quick like, and very sketchy since I don't remember where the
ranks are right off the top of my head:

P: 15
S: -10
E: 5
W: 15

Diary: -10

Pattern: 50
Sorcery: 15
Power words: 10

Sword: 1 (extra hard)
1 (pre-prepared magical conduit -- can I spend points for
this? basically it saves me a lynchpin -- instead of preparing a conduit,
I can channel it through the sword, which is a ready-made conduit for
magical
energy. whaddya think?)

Earring: 2 (Rack N/N spells)
         1 (alt form: invisible)

Friends: 2 in Golden Circle
2 (or 4) maybe in Amber
4 (or 2) maybe in Chaos

Bad Stuff: 3 points

Alternately, no bad stuff and I lose a couple points of toys (although I
think they're kinda neat) or off stats (which might not be difficult,
depending on where exactly the ranks are, or maybe from a contact or
two. Maybe I should pay for a Chaos devotee, just in case.

Is bad stuff a good idea for this character, do you think, given that
s/he
might be viewed as a bad guy by most of the run?

Personality-wise he (or she, not sure yet, but probably he, cuz of
Suri -- sigh --) is a dashing, handsome, and debonair (in his mind
if nowhere else) nobleman. The errant youngest prince, he learned
fighting
(but not too much) because it was done, magic because he's the youngest
and dad needed to do something with him that got him away from court and
the temptation to kill his elder brothers (who are jerks) to get the
throne. (Obviously didn't go to the Oberon school of dynasty-making.)
Dad is prob'ly waiting around for the right woman to marry him to for
political reasons, but for the time being, out of sight, out of mind.
He spent a lot of time fostered in a faraway duchy, and so dad can't
contact
him trivially (he's probly set up an early-warning system that lets
him know when it's time to come back cuz dad's looking for him -- that
or a lackey with a trump of him... maybe I should pay points for a lackey
or two...)

Anyhoo, there you go. devil-may-care errant prince. whaddya think?

(not Caine) wanted him
Remind me of something, though.

Selling a stat down means it goes to Human level, because we're starting
at base Chaos level, not Amber level, right?

If this is true I need to rethink selling back strength.

How's that for a ramble?

--Eon
P.S. cc any replies to ultranet. cuz I really should go home soon.

Oh yeah, more questions. I'd've come over and asked them,
but reports are that you left about 9:30, so I opted not to.

Anyway:

1. If I don't buy up my End, how badly will my spell-hanging
abilities be limited? I.e., will it for example make it
impossible to prepare a full rack of spells in a day?

2. Can one carry more than one rack at a a time?

3. Are there any non-diary bribes I can take for you?

4. Can I send Meilin a photo to scan and play with, or should it
go through you for secrecy's sake?

Thanks!

Sorry I missed you last night. I got a sudden chance to watch Severed
Dreams and ran for it.

Okay, just so you're clear, you have 100 points, starting stats from
AMBER rank. (Chaosites have to buy shapeshift ;)

Amber rank should be sufficient to fill a rack in a day.

You can carry more than one rack at a time.

Non-diary bribes: Well, you can make a web page for your
character... Um, you cna suggest other stuff...

Photo: why don't you send it through me. It will help maintain the
confusion about who is and isn't playing. ;)

Bad stuf or not: A little might be in character, but isn't necessary if
you don't want it.

Background: Well, for your reference, Ian & Melissa are full siblings
and Halsey is their older half brother. Picking which one you are soon
would be nice.

Caine has you hid away from HIS siblings, but you three pretty much know
about each other. You can be the devil may care errant prince if you
like. I think Caine is looking for you to be an ally/minion...

Let me know if you have more questions,

Kate

P.S, Here are the ranks for your reference:

0 = AMBER Rank:
	1	2	3	4	5	6	7	8	9

PSY: 22	21	16	14	12 3	-5	-7	-9

How much will a basic web page get me?

>Background:

I choose Ian.

>I think Caine is looking for you to be an ally/minion...

Could you supply me with some starting suppositions about Caine?
e.g., do I find him to be reasonable or overbearing or laissez-faire
or what? Is being an ally or minion of his a suggestion or a requirement?
Do I like him? Fear him? Know next to nothing about him?

I'm thinking that I'm devil-may-care, but when the chips are down,
family counts (except maybe for Halsey, but I don't know whether
I like him), and I would take Caine's side over anyone else's. I
just might not want it clear that that's what I'm doing.

While you're at it, give me some idea how I feel about Halsey and
Melissa and any pertinent details about our childhood (I'll happily
fill in the rest).

>P.S, Here are the ranks for your reference:

Here's another question for you: Since my starting point is mid-ranked,
can I sell back fewer than 10 points to reach a rank somewhere behind
me? e.g., sell back 2 STR to be ranked 3.5 in STR?

At any rate, the present breakdown looks like:

Prince Ian :)

PSY: 21
STR: 0
END: 7
WAR: 13

Pattern: 50
Sorcery: 15
Sword (Ex-hard+magic channel): 2
Earring (rack n+n spells+danger sense): 4
Allies: 4 (consider this a pool, and distribute them as you like, Kate)

Diary: -10
Webpage: -5 (?)

Bad Stuff: 1 point

And there you are.
In fact, unless something costs significantly more (or less) points than
I'm assuming here, this looks good to go with.

1. Basic web page:

Generally 3, but I'll up that to five if you make it spiffy...

2. Caine:

Well, he gave the impression of being a kind of a laissez-faire parent,
but now that you're older, you think it was carefully calculated to
appear so. In other words, he carefully choose all the servants and
teachers to see to it that you got the "right"sort of upbringing. Or so
Halsey has claimed to you. Caine was always charming and friendly to
you when you were younger. Now that you're older he tends to give you
more responsiblity and expect more. Though he's still quite charming.

When it comes right down to it though, you're not really sure how much
you know about him as a person...

3. Childhood/siblings:

Halsey is a lot like that too, but minus a lot of the charm. Maybe he
just always looked down on you a bit, you being the irresponsible kid
brother. You suspect Halsey may be privy to more of Caine's secrets,
but you aren't really sure.

Halsey didn't grow up with you, Melissa did. She's the baby, though not
actually all that younger than you are. (4-5 years?) She's pretty and
charming and sometimes likes to play the flirt. She can usually beat
you at chess or Go (assuming no handicaps), but her real skill is games
like Diplomacy, that are part tactics and part negotiatiing skill. She
just kills people at those. ;) She doesn't play those kind of games too
much though, so this isn't widely known.

She's always be fairly friendly with you, and will sometimes comes to
you with problems. She did this more whan she was little, but she still
does it sometimes.

4. Ranks:

Yes, you can sell down to ranks between Chaos and Amber if you like.

Other stuff: Let's say you grew up in the Golden Circle. You can make
up a little about the place. You were probbaly raised on a rich estate
about a day or two's ride from someplace important, like a big trading
city. You heard about Amber, but weren't important enough to make in
back to the local gossip there.

Caine has probably found you a place in the city of Amber now, if you
want it. And obviously. He's taken you to walk the Pattern. Proabably
when you turned 19 or 20.

Any other questions?

Be as wacky as you like, so long as you realize I may veto stuff.
Generally, I've been giving people a pretty free reign to invent their
backgrounds, on the theory that what happens in a random shadow is
unlikely to affect things too terribly much (or perhaps I'll twist
things to fit my needs -- you never know).

Age: between 20-30, your choice.

Be aware that you haven't been much in the city and only once in the
castle (snuck in by Caine to walk the pattern). You're a secret from
his siblings. Most of what you know about pattern comes from
experimentation (well, you got some intruction from Caine, verbally).
Halsey could probably give you tips if you asked.

Well, bear this in mind, sorcery costs only 15 compared to the 40-50 of
other major powers, so expect it to be less useful, since I'm trying to
keep to a point being worth about the same no matter where you spent it
(which is admittedly sort of hard). Sorcery is one of those things that
is easy to let get out of control. Some of the ways I'm intending to
reign it in:

well, there's the obvious one in the books of making it take
lots of maintainence time. I don't want to go too overboard on
that, just be wary of trying to abuse fast time shadows to get
around that or of trying to do the Nikrowd I have a rack of
racks and think you can keep a 144 spells racked an 'fresh' all
	the time.

limit the starting spells and make it hard to get more (Frank's
idea) In general, if you want a totally new spell, you're going
to have to spend on the order of months (amber time) researching
it (hey, this fits nicely with the sterotypical wizard who
spends all his time studying, neh?) Or, you could get someone
who already knows it to teach you. Slowly modifying spells you
already know based on in world experience is likely to be a
better way to sneak up on cool stuff sideways. :)

make it hard to learn the what the local magic is like (also
Frank's idea) don't expect to walk into a totally unfamiliar
shadow and immidately be able to figure out the magical
environment -- it will take at least a little time (some places
may take a lot, but that probably means they are SPECIAL)

finally, be aware that pure sorcery will nearly always fall flat
against the defense of a major power... if it's up. :)

Anyway, good ahead and make up 5 or 6 of your own special spells. If
you reign in the temptation to make them heinous, they'll probably be
fine. (Heck, I might let heinous things go, but they may have
unexpected side effects sometimes, so beware.)

Right, so does that help at all?

Thanks for the replies, Kate (see, aren't I being better about answering
my mail? I'm even updating the page as I go, see?)

Here are my replies to your answers, for your perusal:

well, there's the obvious one in the books of making it take
lots of maintainence time. I don't want to go too overboard on
that, just be wary of trying to abuse fast time shadows to get
around that or of trying to do the Nikrowd I have a rack of
racks and think you can keep a 144 spells racked an 'fresh' all
     the time.

I'm not interested in that. I'm more likely to want fewer, more
flexible, less powerful, general use spells, with a small number of very
specific ones developed for special circumstances. I'm a gentleman
sorceror by upbringing, I use magic the way I use warfare or anything
else. Not too much of anything, all things in moderation.

limit the starting spells and make it hard to get more (Frank's
idea) In general, if you want a totally new spell, you're going
to have to spend on the order of months (amber time) researching
it (hey, this fits nicely with the sterotypical wizard who
spends all his time studying, neh?) Or, you could get someone
who already knows it to teach you. Slowly modifying spells you
already know based on in world experience is likely to be a
better way to sneak up on cool stuff sideways. :)

Oh, can I spend some ally points on an aged, more experienced mentor,
then? Is that cool?

My attitude towards starting spells is simply to model spells that I
think Ian will have learned in his 10-15 years of study and adventure
(which is, admittedly, not a particularly long time in the Amber scale
of things). What I really *don't* want to do is have a dozen spells
*exactly* like the ones in the books. How boring is that? So I'm trying
to stick to the spirit of the power level, maybe sacrificing raw power
for more versatility (as is my wont) and trying to work up starting
spells that are more interesting (to me and to Ian) and a little
different.

make it hard to learn the what the local magic is like (also
Frank's idea) don't expect to walk into a totally unfamiliar
shadow and immidately be able to figure out the magical
environment -- it will take at least a little time (some places
may take a lot, but that probably means they are SPECIAL)

What's the mechanism for this going to be? Is just wandering around going
to cut it? What do you think the variables that will affect it will be?
(e.g., Someone with Amber psyche, spending no particular time at it will
figure out the environment in a day. If you have more psyche and/or are
paying more attention to figuring it out, then it'll be quicker.)

finally, be aware that pure sorcery will nearly always fall flat
against the defense of a major power... if it's up. :)

Which begs the following question:

If I want, at some point, to figure out a spell that will, say, bring up
a Pattern defense, do I need Advanced Pattern in order to get away with
it?

I.e., will you tell me how you interpret the "combining sorcery with
major powers" bit?

Anyhoo, have a look at Ian's Spells page, and tell me what you think of
the few sketchy ones I've put up there at this point. Many of them are
similar to the ones in the book, but have slightly different effects.
They're about the power level and effectiveness that I'm interested in,
to start. Tell me what you think.

I've also described a magickal special effect, because gentleman
sorcerors always adopt a signature.

A few more fairly distinct special spells may be forthcoming, but
they're unlikely to be very far off the level of magic I talk about on
the page. Let me know, okay?

Right, so does that help at all?

Yup! Thanks!

     Kate

Okay, I took a look at your sorcery list, and they look pretty good so
far. Customising spells is not a problem.

You'll generally be familiar with the local magic if you've spent more
than a week or two there, even if you never did anything sorcerous. On
the other hand, if you try out some cantrips or mess with pattern, you
may be able to work that out in even a hour or two.

Ally: Well, to pick your ally, you can spend a point or two, but
they'll be someone from shadow who's stuff may or may not always be as
applicable to other shadows. Or you can go fo some sort of Family ally,
in which case, I get to assign them. ;)

You won't need advanced pattern to power your sorcery with pattern,
though it may well help. The way I'm likely to handle that is to have
you put say, 5 more points into sorcery and call it pattern sorcery.

Did I get all your questions?

Kate, and yes, you're doing much better answering your mail. :)

So you take Waveskimmer out, sail away from Amber a bit, and then head
in a direction that isn't home, looking for adventure.

You sail for about a day and a half. The first day is gorgeous and the
winds are good. It looks like you're making excellent time, wherever it
is that you're headed. The next day starts out looking equally
promising, but about midday, a stormfront moves in quite rapidly.
Visibility is way down and the winds are up. The sails are pulling hard
and the skies are black in all directions. The sea is roaring. You're
working to keep Waveskimmer under control, when you realize that you're
hearing more than just the sounds of thunder and wind and the sea. You
can hear the unmistakable sounds of cannon being fired.

Squinting into the distance you can see at least two ships in combat.
No wait, three ships. Two are larger -- probably either armed
merchantmen or light military ships -- and quite definately fighting
each other. There's a lot of smoke. The third, which is harder to see,
is smaller and looks to be giving off a lot smoke, and might well be
crippled.

Sailing a little closer and using binoculors, you can see that one of
the large ones is flying a black flag with a gold emblem -- perhaps some
sort of a bird. The other large ship is flying a red flag with a black
double headed eagle on it. The small one has a blue and gold banner and
definately seems to be some sort of merchant ship.

Hi Kate!

Well, my sympathies are first and foremost with the merchanter, set upon
by a couple of maritime jackals as they are...(Well, it's about as
likely that one is attacking and the other is defending the merchanter,
but since I don't know which is which, they're both bad guys.)

Are any of the emblems familiar to me? Oh, if the merchanter is a rival
trading coster, I may have second thoughts...No no, no-one deserves
murder and mayhem on the high seas, perpetrated by a pack of dogs, even
my family's worst enemies...

Is there a chance of coming upon the merchanter without presenting
either of the vultures a clear shot at me? I assume they're broadside to
each other; the merchanter doesn't have the lamentable luck to be
between them, does she? have the two pirate vessels hove to and just
started slugging it out? (I mean, imagine trying to maneuver in a
storm...- I say, does one of them look to be having an easier time of
getting about than the other?)

I shall try to plot a course, coming out of the wind, which takes me
close to the merchanter, while avoiding the broadsides of the pirate
ships. If I have to go broadside of a pirateer, I want it to be on the
lea side of one of them (*not* between them), and either well outside or
well inside of cannon range.

Let me know if I think such a thing is at *all* possible. If it is,
I'll start the steam engine working, furl the sails, and do the close
maneuvering under steam power...

Eon, and Ian

Ignore previous version -- I sent it out too soon.

> Are any of the emblems familiar to me?

'fraid not, but then you're pretty far from home. (Well, you might
recognize the blue and gold one, but not either of the larger ones.)

> Is there a chance of coming upon the merchanter without presenting
> either of the vultures a clear shot at me?

The situation is a little confused. The doubleheaded eagle ship is
actually in the middle, but there do appear to be at least a few ropes
from it to the smaller merchant man. One of the mast of the eagle ship
appears to be broken as well (any banner that were on it are well
tangled in the rigging now). The other ship is definately flapping a
few sail more freely that she ought to be. She may have other banners
too, but it's hard to make out through the storm and smoke. Getting
closer, you can see that the small merchantman also flies a small flag
of Amber and another flag presumably from its Golden Circle country of
origin. They other two are still firing cannon back and forth, though
the one with the black and gold emblem is coming in close to the second,
perhaps in an attempt to board. Everything is being frustrated by the
storm, of course.

Very crude ascii picture:

                        [-Ship 1->

                         [-Ship 2->  /\
                                    /3/
[--you->                           / /

Ship 1 = black and gold banner; Ship 2 = doubleheaded eagle banner; 3 =
small merchantman flying gold fleurs des lees (sp?) on a blue field banner,
unicorn of Amber, & white crescent on blue.

You should be able to do this. The steam engine sputters a lot though,
and doesn't look too reliable. You may be in a shadow where this doesn't
work well. Sail may be faster at this rate.

All right then. I maynot be the best at this shadow shifting stuff,
but here's what I want: Since being able to make out the other flags
on Ship 1 seems to require a chance meeting of wind and illumination,
and since wind and lightning are in abundance here, I'd like to arrange
a mmoentary synergy of same such that a bolt of lightning illuminates
the ship just as a strong momentary crosswise wind clears the smoke
from about the masts so I can see the flags.

I'll also endeavor to pull alongside the merchantman:

                         [-Ship 1->

                          [-Ship 2->  /\
                                     /3/
                                    / /
                               [--you->

And see if there is crew on her decks or anyone tending to
(either trying to cut or secure) the ropes securing her to the
other ship.

My intent is (since I don't think I have a chance of cutting her
loose and towing her away myself, under the circumstances) to
see if I can contact her crew and take whatever item of contention
is on that ship away with me, to be returned to Amber.

I can accommodate a few crew, but not all...

You owe me a diary entry for the conversation with Melissa and one for
last Sunday's combat in the rain.

You were going to sail off to the nearby port city to send help or at
least an escort back to the scene of the great pirate battle. The first
mate will ask permission to send on of his officers with you on
Waveskimmer. The trip will likely take a couplof hours at least, but
can certainly be abstracted.

Well, N-1 of my amberites are sort of collectively holding up the last
one. I was just sending mail to everyone who'd been quiet for a while.
(Quite a few.) It gets hard to run an e-mail game when most of the
players are being delinquent.

I was also wondering what had happened to cause you to go from being one
of my best e-mail answerers to being so silent.

Travel on to Bossis and drop the guy off so he can get a tug
out to the disabled ship. Unless they want more than a deposition
from me, I'm outta there.

If I need to make some repairs, I'll do that there.

I want to sail on, using the time to conjure a few things, like
a couple of birds whose eyes I can see through. I'll use pattern
and conjuration to get what I want. Call them my scouts. They
probably ought to have some combat competence, too.

Then off for more adventure.

You can find a couple of birds, sorts of raven like dark birds, that you
thing might make good base for some conjured abilities. With a couple
days work [*], you can conjure in a enough psychic sensitivity that you
can sort of sense what they're seeing, though "seeing through their
eyes" is probably too strong a term. You're not sure whether the
connection isn't strong enough or high enough bandwidth, or whether the
strangeness of the birds' perceptions are are confusing the issue.

It's not clear that they've had any "combat" experience, in the
conventional sense of the word, but they probably make reasonably good
scouts nonetheless.

So, where are you headed to?

----
[*] Probably hindered by the periodic crossing of shadow barriers. You
anticipate they'll need some periodic upkeep if you intend to keep
switching shadows.

Do I think that sitting down in one shadow for half a week making them
more sturdy will help?

If so, I shadow shift to a nice house (with a dock on the beach) on an
island with food and water readily to hand that's not being used
(because it's off-season and a bit too cool yet), with a live-in man
friday for hire (who'd be amenable to coming along with me afterwards if
he's really good and works out).

There, I work on the birds for a few days until they're done.

Then, off to "See what Caine would like me to see."

Sitting in one shadow for a week would definately help, so you do that.
The live-in man is competant, but not exceptional. The weather is nice,
if a bit on the cool side.

The birds seem to be done. It's not the same as actually being there
yourself. It really must be that birds see things differently, but you
think they'll do.

Then you set off, and I still haven't been able to figure out where you
go. :(

Good.

Well, I think that Caine has plans for me. I don't know what they are,
but I don't think I'll necessarily dislike them. I don't quite believe
that he went to all that trouble to craft my upbringing in order to
create cannon fodder, for example. Then again, although I may not be a
pawn, I'm probably still convinced that I'm *in* the game instead of
*running* it. Eventually, that should change. Right now, I'll play
along, just to see what's going on.

And making the request in that meta-game fashion is just the sort of

There. Did that make any sense at all?

All right, you make the birds and you set sail, shadow shifting towards
'what Caine wants you to see.' You sail on for 4 or 5 days without any
real sign of anything. There are a few small islands, but there doesn't
seem to be much of anything on them. The birds can't go too far, since
there's often nothing for them to land on and rest.

Do you keep going or change your plans?

You sail on for another couple of days. The sun is either low in the
sky or obscured behind difficult to perceive clouds. The efects is sort
of like perpetual twilight. The air and water are fairly warm.
Everything is still quite watery, though there are now little bare
rocklets here and there. If Waveskimmer has a keel, it's going to be
rough going unless yuo let it shift slightly as you go.

One of your birds gives you the impression of a, hrm, girl?

Well no point in destroying my present while getting to what Caine
wants me to see. I'll let the keel shift up as we go. So is the, "hrm,
girl?" in my path or will it require a detour to investigate her?

Mind you, I'm going to investigate her anyway, she may be a valuable
clue, but I want to know whether I'm detouring or not in order to do it.

And a couple more birds should head over there to see what's going on.
Not like a whole flock, just a couple more to see if the general
impression is strengthened or not.

There ya go.

You only have a couple of birds, I thought, but yeah, you can send them
all over. It doesn't really strenghten the general impression. There's
only so much you can do about the fact that birds don't think and
percieve quite the way people do, sadly.

She's not really a detour, since she's nearby in the same shadow, but
you don't really feel you've gotten where you're going either.

Fine. How many do I have, then? How about 3? Is 3 good?

Oh well, it still should be interesting. I'll try to note the
"direction" I was heading, and go investigate the "girl."

How far away is she from the water? The bird should have a pretty good idea
of direction and distance, birds being good at such things...Or is she
right near the water on one of those rock thingies?

And can I get to her on the ship, or will I have to drop anchor a ways off
and walk for a bit? Even better, can I Pattern-wise finagle a deeper
trench as close to her as possible?

3 birds sounds about right.

She's actually quite near the ater, though you can't quite get the boat
that close. You do a little pattern finagling and manage to produce a
sort of lagoon not too far away. The rocks aren't especially big, but
there are enough of them that the water is pretty shallow anywhere
nearby.

You tie up the boat and hop off, getting a slightly disconcerting
feeling as you're docking and tying up the boat and such, but it fades.

You walk towards the "girl" and sure enough, there's a pretty blond girl
sitting on a rock dangling her legs into the water. She doesn't appear
to have noticed you yet.

[Send a description of your appearance and let me know what if anything
you bring with you.]

She says, with a smile in her voice, "Well my lord, that depends. Who
might be asking?"

You can probably catch that she's either a blond or light brunette.

"Well, I daresay any number of disreputable sorts *might* be asking.
Alternately, a well-favored prince of high birth *might* be asking.
More likely, however, is that an adventuresome son of a sea-going clan
*is* asking.

Speaking of disconcerting thoughts, Eon just had one.

Of the blondes in the rogue's gallery, one is (gasp) Suri.

..

Let's just hope not.

Also, what are your rules regarding how easy it is to conjure non-point
stuff? Is that written down somewhere?

Lilting, "There are more like you? How lovely."

She's treading water easily, not making any particular effort to hide.
"I rarely entertain charming young men in *quite* this setting --
however in your case I would be willing to make an exception."

She makes a show of thinking. "Let me see... you may call me Shana.
And for starters, I think I would like to don my clothing. Though
personally, if I must have trouble, then delightful trouble seems
infinitely preferable to the more traditional sort."

Standing there is a girl with straight blonde hair made darker for being
wet, and slicked back to fall to her shoulders. She's wearing a long
skirt and matching tunic-style blouse in pale lavender cotton. The
white scarf wrapped low and snug around her waist is rather damp. A
nondescript sword hangs comfortably from one hip.

The pale grey eyes are sparking with amusement. Fair complexion.
Sleight. She's not your standard beauty by any means, but sort of
pretty if you like the fragile look. Silver and lavender earings
dangle from her ears. Around her neck, a chain of crystal droplet,
and a ring of the same crystal on her left hand.

He turns around.

A smile blossoms on his face as he bows and he mutters, half
under his breath, "...And this is why I sojourn here/Alone and
palely loitering/Though the sedge is withered from the Lake/And no
birds sing."

He reaches into his right sleeve with his left hand, and pulls out
a perfect pale lavender lotus blossum, which he offers to you.

He then offers his arm, and says, "Would my lady care for a turn

misinformed. But if not, and the 'maddening chambers of chaos' are filled
with 'death-handed demons horrible of mien' such as yourself, truly, I
hope someday that I will have the honor of visiting it."

He smiles again, as before, and resumes walking.

--Eon, for Ian

For Kate:
Well, the lady obviously wanted a proper response. It would have been
rude of me to brush off her admission without some appropriate display,
don't you think? For myself, nothing is quite so disappointing as a
scene ruined by a flat response to an interesting statement.
:)
--Ian, er, Morley.

"And perhaps someday I will have the honor of visiting Amber.
Misinformation runs rampant there too, I take it? It happens even to
the best, and as for me, too often I find myself on the receiving
end." Wry grin.

"We are not so horrible as you might think, but neither is it heaven.
So, what else does this... elder have to say about us?"

"I trust misinformation runs rampant wherever there are people with
vested interests in presenting things a particular way. This poor
creature [jerks a thumb at his own chest] wouldn't know too much about
such goings on in Amber, since the day that Morley ends up in Amber is
unlikely to be a happy one." Matching wry grin.

"I hope the lady will warn me if she decides to head Amberwards, as it
is the last place on my itinerary for the forseeable future." Smile. "I
hope."

"Elder? No 'Elder,' as that seems a term of some respect. No, it was
merely a haggard-looking old fellow, who was a passenger aboard a ship
I, ah, served upon for a very short time a while ago." Again, a wistful
faraway smile. "Nervous fellow, always looking over his shoulder and
starting at shadows, as if he expected someone to-- well, at any rate,
he would speak of the Logrus and demons of chaos when he was in his
cups. That is where I heard the term. And all he had were imprecations
and unlikely tales. I mostly discounted them as the drunken ramblings of
a poor old lunatic. In restrospect, however, I have seen some things
recently that seemed unlikely to me before I was...placed in the
position I find myself in.

"Before we continue, we really must make some sort of arrangements. I
would rather not leave my ship behind, wherever we go. Would this Logrus
fellow bring me along, as well as my little skiff? I have sailed many
strange seas with her, and am loathe to leave her behind."

"I would not presume to bore you with that which you are already

And falls silent, a frown on his features...

With a wink and a mischievous grin, "Who said anyone needs to know?"

"Milord is correct in that, as a rule, the denizens of Chaos do not take
kindly to anything remotely related to Amber. I doubt you will be in any
danger from a casual tour, but you may wish to reconsider."

"I suspect if we are careful, no one will be the wiser. This will entail
making absolutely no use of Pattern, and perhaps avoiding some of the more,
ah, sensitive areas. If milord wishes, I would be willing to look to see
how... obvious you are."

With a self-deprecating flick towards his clothing, he says,

Then he smiles, devilishly.

"In light of that, it hardly seems necessary to check further

courtly nod, "and the company, I think, could not be better."

He pauses and takes a step back, standing with his arms slightly

He closes his eyes, a vague smirk about his lips.

"...Then fire away."

Hi Kate,

So when I stop and say fire away, My eyes aren't completely closed;
rather, I've got one open a bit and am peeking.

I'm not actually trying to be too subtle about it, the point is
to be playful, not sneaky. (That's what the smirk is for).

Aside from that, I'm waiting for that creepy feeling again. And
I've got the psyche working on noticing where it's coming from.

You get that creeping felling again as soon as she starts talking.

When she holds out her hand, you feel a sudden and sharp urge to jump
out of your skin. If you're eyes are open at all, you can see the air
distort around you (sort of like the special effects of time travel from
Time Cop if you saw that). Something (the Logrus you assume) wraps
itself around you and her. You feel as though you could almost contact
her mind to mind. Her mind is very powerful.

Hey Kate,

So I don't bring the Pattern to mind immediately, but I do immediately
start using every mind-clearing technique I know.

I draw my sword while looking around for enemies, and take in the area.

I ask Shoshana if she's all right, and if she knows the fellow caught

Here's precisely what I ask, since I can't just send remailer mail til I
know to whom it should be sent...

"I have three questions for milady, if she feels up to answering them.
In order of importance: First, are you well? Second, what happened?
Third, who is yon fellow *in flagrante*?"

"Well, milady, I find myself tolerably well, you do me a great service
by inquiring!

"I daresay plans were come to a bit hastily, as I would have enjoyed the
opportunity to secure a few items from my ship ere we left on our jaunt,
but -bah!- I am sure I grow too cautious too soon, for as impetuosity is
the purview of the young, truly undue caution is the purview of the wise
and aged, neither of which I pretend to be... [smiles] But pray tell me,
what occurred to occasion such a detour as you have just described to
me?"

As he says this, he walks over to the prone fellow, his sword still
drawn, but not pointed at the fellow, and peers down at him...

"Milady would not have brought an extra cloak, would she?"

--Morley

Kate, is he visibly breathing? I mean, he doesn't have any clothes on to
hide the movement of his chest. And I look at his eyelids to see if he's
sleeping or unconscious. I don't actually drop down to his level yet, I
am examining him as well as I can from a standing height, ready for
wickedness..

He's breathing, and almost certainly some flavor of unconscious.
He's sort of "face down in the mud" as it were, though you, at least,
have a partial view of his face: his eyes are closed and his mouth
is slightly open...

Poor fellow.

I try to identify the signs of proper breeding, for example,
whether his oddly colored hair is trimmed or scraggly, whether
his fingernails are properly cared for (They may be dirty, but
are they trimmed?), whether his feet are calloused, and if so, where
(for example, a gentleman may have callouses which correspond to
stirrups or walking boots, while peasants and commoners are likely
to have all-over callouses, and nobility may have none at all...)

Are there marks, cuts, or bruises on him that might indicate a scuffle?
Is there blood on the ground beneath him? I will eventually have to
turn him over, but I see what I can from here before doing that.

Well, he is either a knave, reaping the harvest of his knavery, or
the victim of some foul play. Either way, something should be done
about him.

If those inquiries turn up nothing of use or consequence, I will
squat and endeavor to turn him over, first setting my sword outside of
his reach but within mine, then grabbing his ankles and rolling him over
by rotating them. Before that, I ask milady to avert her eyes if she
hasn't already produced a cloak: "Perhaps milady cares to avert her eyes?"

His hair is shoulder length, dirty, and slightly scraggly. There are
no visible wounds and no obvious pools of blood. His nails are short
and neat, though his feet are incredibly dusty...

Let's wait on the rest until I hear from your little friend. :)
