I can't see how she could have married Vere if she were. It's unlikely anyone knew Uriel would react the way he did when Sive died. The had always been a strong unwritten rule against assassinating the King. There are still a lot of people who could never do that; Uriel may have changed chaos society very profoundly. Certainly his successor didn't last very long. I wouldn't be surprised if Edward finds himself on the wrong end of a sword, the first time he attempt to demonstrate real power. "The funeral? Where to begin. When word of Sive's death reached Uriel, he literally exploded. Practically tore part of Jasbyways apart with his bare hands, until he was calmed down. Then he quieted and seemed to accept it, but really he was nursing a cold fury against the King. I'm still not sure that was entirely planned at the funeral though. More people were armed more than is usually customary in the presence of the King, owing to some obscure house customs, and the King's personal guard was not particularly competant or loyal. I think Uriel planed to murder the King, but the coup was somewhat unexpected. Perhaps his rage just got the better of him. "Or perhaps not, the Minobees and Barimans and Nyborgs all reacted quite fast. An odd collection of houses though. Minobee and Jasby have long been allies, but Bariman and Nyborg -- well, perhaps not. Certainly Nyborg has never been one to stand on inconveneint tradition. And Wynet is a bold, clever man. "At any rate, when Uriel went to pay his final respects with his brother in law, he took one look at Sive's body laid out and stabbed Vere through the eye so hard the tip of the blade came out the other side of his head. Half the room was stunned into inaction, and Jakov Harnack and some of Uriel's entourage began cutting down Vere's guards and anyone else known to be of Swayvil blood -- even those married into other houses. The hall erupted into chaos. The Minobees started trying to 'evacuate' some of the important people from other houses, which turned out to be a great boon when some of those houses needed convincing to accept Uriel as King later. "After about 20 minutes of intense fighting, the hall calmed. A lot of people were dead, dying or badly injured. I believe there was a lot of opportunistic killing in the confusion." The Hendrakes took a lot of damage too, having leapt to the King's defense. That seems to be one constant of the universe: the Hendrakes are loyal to the crown. The Harnacks were using poison however, and took down almost a half dozen of them. Jakov Harnack certainly knew that was coming. He was a nasty little bastard. I never understood what Uriel saw in him. "A lot of people fled, and Uriel declared himself King on the spot. Jakov was going to crown him, but Seremirgha Bariman stepped up and offered to do the job. Bariman and Nyborg came out in favor on the spot. Minobee came out in favor within a few hours, and put presssure on most of the other houses to do likewise. Somewhere along the way, Uriel went from King to Emperor. That very nearly was the final straw for the Hendrakes, but they came a round suddenly if grudgingly, and that was everyone. Within 3 or 4 days, Uriel was corwned Emperor formally. "Morganna was always about, but I was never sure what she did. You're grandfather confided in her a lot though, that I'm sure of. Since your grandmother died when Morganna was born, Uriel doted on Morganna. "After the coup, well, the Hendrakes were furious. They've always been loyal to the crown and aren't the sort to stand for this sort of non-traditional approach to problem solving on Uriel's part. They'd probably wouldn't have minded, if, for instance, he'd challenged Vere to a duel. Of course, Vere might have just passed it off to a champion... shrug, regardless, blatant murder of your king goes against everything the Hendrakes believe. The houses that supported Uriel probably didn't, in general, mind. Chanicutt and Ardas weren't too pleased, obviously. The moderate houses, Helgram and Sawall mostly, were probably not tremendously pleased but elected to wait and see what sort of a King Uriel turned out to be. Jakov Harnack has always been vehemently anti-Amber. Not unreasonable really, as long as it exists it's a threat to Chaos. The Barimans were probably behind destroying it. The real turning point came when Borel resigned as Lord General and the position was given to the Baron Hawkings, another ardent Jacobin. I think that was the first time in centuries that there hasn't been a Hendrake as Lord General of Chaos. "Could we have won? I suspect so, if everyone had been behind it. I cannot believe that Amber could ever withstand the full might of Chaos -- it just isn't powerful enough. That's one arguement for not bothering with them, but they do cause quite a mess from time to time. (It's a lot like the description in the Shadow Knight book to.) The important thing to bear in mind is that you don't move your whole house closer (unless you pull a coup), each person traces all their various blood connections to some sort of "ground zero." That used to be old Swayvil himself, or more generally, the Swayvill bloodline, but that's pretty much gone at this point (or pretty dilute). One could make the case that the new zero point is Staffan Helgram. Or not. It's hard to say. Uriel did a pretty good job of screwing up thousands upon thousands of years of precedent... ;) Being close to the throne doesn't get you much official power, but it gets you a lot of unofficial power, as people attempt to prepare for contingencies and such. Marrying in gets you some about of influence to. Techinically, it only affects your children, but if they're small or easily influenced... and of course, being married to the King/Queen presumably carries with it a certain amount of power too. Remember that a lot of power is 'unofficial' rather than what might exist on paper. (Think more of Imperial china than, say, the modern day US.) Think of each Ways as a sort of connector to a bunch of shadows, with the majority "anchored" so to speak in Chaos proper, usually someplace along the Rim, if it's a great house. So a house's "lands" are usually all the shadows connected onto the main ways (which is generally considered to be actually in Chaos) the parts that hang more into the shadows are known as "byways" if they are particularly extensive.
