XXI (Full Major in the Humanities) for German
8 elective subjects in the field (which may include a pre-thesis and a thesis), plus a four-subject cluster. The cluster is usually formed within a single second discipline of the humanities, arts, or social sciences. In special cases, it may draw together subjects from different disciplines to form a coherent grouping.
To satisfy the requirement that students complete two Communication-intensive subjects in the major, students must take 21F.406 and 21F.407. Registration for 21F.406 and 21F.407 must be simultaneous with one of 21F.409, 21F.410, 21F.412, 21F.414, 21F.415, 21F.416, or 21F.420.


XXI-F (Full Major in French)
11 subjects beginning at Level III which may include a pre-thesis and thesis*.
To satisfy the requirement that students complete two Communication-intensive subjects in the major, students must take 21F.306 and 21F.307. Registration for 21F.306 and 21F.307 must be simultaneous with one of 21F.308, 21F.310, 21F.311, 21F.312, 21F.315, 21F.320, 21F.321, 21F.325J, 21F.341, 21F.346 or 21F.347.


XXI-F (Full Major in Spanish)
11 subjects beginning at Level III which may include a pre-thesis and thesis*.
To satisfy the requirement that students complete two Communication-intensive subjects in the major, students must take 21F.708 and 21F.709. Registration for 21F.708 and 21F.709 must be simultaneous with one of 21F.716J, 21F.721, 21F.730, 21F.735, 21F.738J, 21F.739 or 21F.740.

XXI- E or S (Joint degree with Foreign Languages & Literatures and Engineering or Science)
In addition to your Engineering or Science requirements, you need 9 subjects beginning with Level III in
FL&L which may include pre-thesis and thesis*.

* Pre-thesis and thesis are reserved for students who have completed most or all of the subjects offered in a particular language group and demonstrate outstanding competence in the particular field of study. Normally, it is recommended that students substitute two additional subjects in place of a thesis option.

Planning your major.
The following are the steps to take if you are interested in majoring in FL&L:

1.) Meet with the Undergraduate Academic Administrator in 14N-310, 3-4550 to chart out proposed schedule and requirements.
2.) Discuss your plans with an FL&L faculty member in the particular language group to determine whether your schedule and course load will allow you to complete all the units necessary for prospective major.
