I sent Peoples Federal Savings Bank the following message through their Web site on or around June 17: I sent you a rather strongly worded letter last week concerning my disappointment with your handling of the telephone banking portion of your computer conversion. I have just attempted to withdraw money from an ATM for the first time since the conversion, and I am writing to complain about your handling of that portion of the computer conversion as well. Before the conversion, I always accessed my money market account by referring to it at ATMs as a "savings" account. I tried to do that this morning at another bank's SUM ATM, and it failed. Thinking that perhaps there was a problem with the interface between the SUM network and your new computers, I tried again at one of your ATMs; it failed again. Then I tried to access my checking account, and the ATM told me that I had TWO checking accounts and I had to choose which one I wanted to access. So here's the first problem.... Apparently, in the new computer system, money market accounts are classified as checking accounts when using ATMs, and you never bothered to notify your customers about this change. The second problem is that the list of my two checking accounts from which I was asked to choose looked like this: 1. CHECKING 2. CHECKING Hmm, now THAT'S certainly intuitive, don't you think? I'm supposed to choose between my checking account and my checking account, eh? The third problem is that the account choice screen says that I'm supposed to key in the number of the account I want and hit the ENTER key. In fact, hitting the ENTER key doesn't work. I had to discover through trial and error that the only way to successfully select an account and get past this screen is to press the unlabeled button at the bottom of the column of buttons to the right of the ATM screen. If I were a bit less clever or a bit more computer-phobic (and thus less willing to play with the ATM to figure out what I needed to do), I would have been stuck on a Sunday with no money in my pocket and no way to access my accounts (since the bank is closed). I like supporting a local bank, but your handling of this computer conversion has left me on the cusp of closing my accounts with you and switching to another bank. Your reaction to this message and the one I sent you last week will determine whether I do that.
