Childbirth Accommodation Policy

In 2004 a Childbirth Accommodation policy was adopted by the Institute. According to the policy, female graduate students supported by teaching and/or research assistantships will be eligible for eight weeks of salary, as well as retaining access to MIT Medical facilities, all services on the Student Extended Insurance Plan, and Institute housing. Unsupported students are also provided for in the Childbirth Accommodation Policy, although they will not receive a stipend if none was received previously.

All funds for the policy come from the Childbirth Accommodation Insurance Pool, a collection of funds contributed by the Provost and administered by the Graduate Students Office.

This policy represents a momentous step in the right direction towards MIT's support for women students, and comes with great anticipation on the part of the graduate student community, in particular the GSC Academics Research and Careers Committee, which began the effort to draft a policy in the Fall of 2002. Under the direction of Dean for Graduate Students Ike Colbert, Provost Bob Brown, and the GSC Officers, the policy underwent a number of revisions before reaching its final form.
