International Student: Fellowship

- If you are an international student with a fellowship, you will receive a 1042S form from MIT Payroll.
- You will get two copies of the 1042S: you must attach one to the federal tax return, and the other to the state tax return. Remember to make a copy for yourself!
- MIT Fellowships are subject to federal tax, but if you are nonresident of Massachusetts, then you do not owe state tax on your fellowship. BEWARE: International student CAN be residents of Massachusetts!
- You must file federal and state tax returns even if you do not owe any tax
- Fellowships are paid with federal tax already deducted (generally 14%), but state tax is not deducted from the fellowships
